Welcome back to Question of the Week! This week's question is...

Which deceased author would you have liked to meet?

Amber: "The deceased author I would have most liked to meet is Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors of all time and I really enjoy his philosophy toward life. He was a very funny, sarcastic person, and I would have liked to hear him talk and share his opinions on the world. It wouldn't have to be big things either like politics or world events. I'd like to know what his favorite vacation was, the best meal he ever ate, or what he thought about modern music.

As a writer, I would have loved to ask his advice on the craft. I've read, and used, his eight rules for writing in my own process. Even so, I'd have liked to hear more about what he found helpful and less so in his writing process. I'd be curious to learn what inspired him, how he got over writing slumps, and what made him want to tell the stories he wrote. I would also like to learn more about how he wrote characters, who his influences were, and what he liked to read.

Beyond the professional, I would have liked to meet him because he seemed exceedingly kind. He was a humanist, and really believed in loving your fellow human. Despite being a biting satirist, in many of his interviews and letters he lauded creativity and joy in everyday life. In my gloomier moods, I will sometimes turn to Vonnegut to have a not too sappy reminder to embrace life. There are many writers whose work I love and whose brains I would like to pick. But there really is something so special about wanting to just have a conversation and shoot the breeze with someone, because of how much I enjoy and respect the way his mind works. I would have loved to laugh with him. "

Now it's your turn! We look forward to hearing from you!

Welcome back to !

Amber's pick: The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow.

"I picked up this book because I saw a TV show adaptation was made based on it. I haven't seen the show yet because I am a book before movie/show person. Having read the book, I'm even more excited for the show. 'The Other Bennet Sister' expands on the Bennet family from Jane Austen's famous novel 'Pride and Prejudice,' but from the middle sister Mary's point of view.

Mary is the often overlooked Bennet sister. Not the beauty Jane is, nor the liveliness of Lizzie, nor the willfulness of Lydia and her shadow, Kitty. Mary is plain, according to her mother, and pretentious, according to everyone else. With this novel, Mary becomes so much more. This book breathes life and care into the forgotten middle sister, showing her complex inner thoughts and feelings, and how fraught her relationship with her family is. The first third of the book covers a good portion of the events from 'Pride and Prejudice' through Mary's eyes. The familiarity of this part of the story gives a great foundation for the rest of the story, while also giving added context and a conflicting perception of the people and events compared to the original. The last two thirds is totally original, and allows for significant growth for Mary's character, as well as some for the other Bennets.

Fans of Jane Austen will find the writing style and tone very similar to the original, while incorporating enough modern style to keep it from being too dense. It was a joy to revisit beloved characters, and see one person's interpretation of what the events post P&P would have looked like. This is a sweet, hopeful love story that fits well in the Austen sphere. I feel so much tenderness toward Mary, and I'm so glad I got to read her getting the life she wanted and deserved."

Welcome back to Question of the Week! This week's question is...

If you could have the magic powers from any book you've read, which one would you want?

Amanda: "It's so hard to choose--there are so many books with fascinating and delightful magic systems. For now, I'll say the powers from the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane would be at the top of my list. Of course, it doesn't hurt that one character's magical journey starts in a library, but that's part of the beauty of it. In the world of the Young Wizards series, you don't need to have special parentage or attend a magic school: with enough cleverness, inner strength, and willingness to learn, anyone may be chosen to wield the magic forces of the universe. All you need to do is be the right kind of person for the job and the Wizard's Manual will make itself known to you. From that moment, you use your magic in service to Life, guarding growth and easing pain. There will be danger aplenty once you take the Wizard's Oath, sure, but there will also be very little limit to the magic you can learn.

For all their magic, the Young Wizards books just might be my own Wizard's Manual."

Now it's your turn! We look forward to hearing from you!
