Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

The Van-Far Fire Protection District is teaming up with NFPA to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week™, October 4 -10, Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.

Help us spread the word that everyday actions can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires.
Charge Smart:
- Use the charger and cord that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface - not on a bed, couch, or under a pillow.
- If a device becomes unusually hot, swells, smells strange, or starts smoking, stop using it immediately.
- Unplug devices when they are fully charged.
- Charge larger devices like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside and away from exits.
- Never use or charge damaged batteries.
- Keep your device in sight if charging while in flight, and never charge devices such as e-cigarettes or vapes in flight.

Follow as we share more lithium-ion battery safety tips.

Use your charging superpower by making smart choices every time you plug in.
