FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 1, 2026
Norfolk Southern grants $5000 to George G McMurtry Fire Dept. Vandergrift #1 in support of safety initiatives.
George G McMurtry Fire Dept #1 is proud to announce it has received a $5000 grant from Norfolk Southern through its Safety First Grant Program. The funding will support the purchase of a new multi-channel mobile radio for the newly acquired Pierce Fire Engine to better serve our community and help to improve communications with Westmoreland and Armstrong counties dispatch centers and other fire units on the scene of emergencies.
This grant is part of Norfolk Southern’s commitment to strengthening the communities it serves across its 22-state network. Launched in 2023, Norfolk Southern’s open-application grant programs are designed to support organizations working to further the areas of safety, sustainability, workforce development, and community resilience.
The officers and members of the department are appreciative of Norfolk Southern’s support of our mission to serve the residents of our community and also several miles of Norfolk’s rail line through our boroughs. We are grateful to Norfolk Southern for recognizing our work and supporting communities like ours across the country, says Chief Randy Dunmire.
“The Safety First Grant Program advances community safety by supporting first responders, emergency preparedness initiatives, and safety education,” said Kristin Wong, Director of the Norfolk Southern Foundation & Community Impact. “It honors those who protect our neighborhoods every day and aims to foster a culture of safety throughout Norfolk Southern’s network.”
The Norfolk Southern grant application process for 2026 was open through Aug. 3. For more information is found on the company’s website.
