October is Vashon Partners in Education - PIE month.

Vashon Partners in Education (PIE) is a nonprofit group formed 39 years ago by parents, educators and community members, to support Vashon’s public schools by making grants to those closest to the learning process – teachers, staff, and students. PIE grants support activities, materials and experiences that promote hands-on learning and extracurricular programming in all grade levels of Vashon’s schools. PIE is an all-volunteer organization. Other than administrative costs, all money raised goes directly to grants for that school year.

What does PIE fund?
Each year, teachers rely on PIE grants for the “extras” that make learning fun. Field trips, hands-on materials, art projects, books, musical instruments, guest speakers, performances and much more.

How are PIE grants awarded?
This month, PIE is reviewing over 40 grant requests from teachers across Vashon’s schools, including Family and Student Link. The amount requested is more than $70,000. Grant proposals are assessed on educational value, innovation, need, and impact. We will notify teachers of their awards in early November and the learning will happen in Vashon’s classrooms this school year.

How can families contribute to PIE?
You can help teachers bring innovation to their classrooms by donating to PIE today! Donate at vashonpie.org or mail a check to Vashon PIE, PO Box 1645, Vashon, WA 98070.
No donation to PIE is too small! Many successful grant requests are for smaller amounts.

A big thank you to the community members who were able to attend our Bond Forum last night. For those that were unable to be there in-person or watch the live stream, the presentation is archived and available for viewing on the District's Bond webpage - www dot vashonsd dot org/bond (unfortunately as of today FB now wants us to pay extra money to paste more than two links a month in our posts).

The Bond Planning Task Force will be providing a recommendation to the VISD Board of Directors on Thursday, October 22, at the Regular Board Meeting. We encourage interested community members to attend or to stream the meeting to learn more.

As the Vashon Island School District explores the possibility of a February 2027 Bond, we would like to invite the community to learn more about how the Bond Task Force Planning Committee arrived at its recommendation, the 10-year facilities master-plan, and how a potential bond can address needs the District has identified.

We invite all members of the community to join us for this conversation and to learn more about all of the aspects of the potential bond proposal.

As we honor Indigenous People today, we think about the Lucy Gerand mural that looks out over our playground at Chautauqua Elementary.

Lucy and her family were native Sx̌ʷəbabš, also known as the Swift Water People, who inhabited Vashon-Maury island for millenia. Lucy and her family later moved to the Puyallup Reservation in 1893. Documented interviews with Lucy, conducted in the early 1900s, are where much of our understanding of native populations on the island come from.

We acknowledge that the Vashon Island School District stands on the ancestral lands of the sx̌ʷəbabš people, and we acknowledge all the tribal members in the area, whose stewardship of and relationships with our greater Puget Sound area continue today.

FamilyLink middle school students recently took part in a Stop Motion Animation Studio! In this hands-on workshop, students explore the art of stop motion animation using the app Cloud Stop Motion. Students design characters, build miniature sets, and create their own short animated films. Students learn the basics of storytelling, camera techniques, and creative problem-solving. From clay figures to paper cutouts, everyday materials become the building blocks for imaginative worlds. The class will culminate in a final project and a mini film festival to celebrate student work.

A big thank you to Partners in Education (PIE) for sponsoring this popular workshop.

This rich and unique experience of the VISD education is helped made possible by the Vashon Schools Foundation and Vashon Partners in Education.

As part of an examination of a potential February 2027 bond, Vashon Island School District is exploring the potential for future community use of McMurray Middle School and would like islanders and organization to be part of the conversation.

Before imagining what that might look like, we want to hear from the community. We are inviting community organizations, service providers, businesses, nonprofits, educators, arts and cultural groups, health and wellness providers, and anyone who may have ideas for how McMurray could serve Vashon in the future.

Date: Thursday, October 15
Time: 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

McMurray Middle School is off to an exciting start this fall! We are thrilled to have more than 100 students participating in our fall sports programs, including cross country and volleyball. Getting involved in school activities is an important way for students to build connections, develop a sense of belonging, and become part of our school community.

We are also looking forward to our upcoming Clubs Fair, where students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of interests and connect with peers who share those passions. At McMurray, we value creating opportunities for every student to find their place, build meaningful relationships, and feel connected to our school community.

We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to seeing our students have fun, get involved, support one another, and shine—in clubs, athletics, the classroom, and beyond!
