This week members of the Sheriff's Bomb Squad were privileged to attend the name dedication ceremony at the Bomb Technician Memorial at Hazardous Devices School in Huntsville, Alabama.

This ceremony honored the 22 names on the bomb technician memorial wall, including Los Angeles County Sheriff's Bomb Squad Technicians Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus, and William Osborn who lost their lives in the line of duty on July 18, 2025 and were permanently added to the wall this week in memory of their dedication to public service and the bomb squad community.

The Ventura County Sheriff's Bomb Squad was honored to stand beside our brothers and sisters from across the country in support of our Los Angeles County bomb technician family.

πŸ’₯This weekend the Sheriff's Bomb Squad along with members of the EOD Unit from Naval Base Ventura County responded to Thousand Oaks to assist patrol deputies on a call involving found military ordnance.

A family was organizing the belongings of their late grandfather who served in WWII and came across a cache of authentic Japanese, British, and American grenades along with other ordnance dating back nearly a century.

Ultimately, the items were examined and cleared to be transported for disposal at the family's request. Should you come across items similar to this, leave them in place, evacuate the area and call 911. A simple untrained look is often not enough to distinguish inert military memorabilia from live munitions. It's always better to be safe than sorry. πŸ’£

πŸ”₯This evening the Sheriff's Bomb Squad Arson Investigator assisted the Ventura County Fire Department Arson Investigator at a residential fire in the City of Camarillo.

The fire caused moderate damage to two homes and the investigation determined the fire was accidental and started in the area of the family's trash cans.

It is best practice to never throw away coals, ashes, batteries, spent fireworks, aerosol cans, combustible liquids, grease rags, paints, household cleaners, or electronics. Not only is it against the law to dispose of hazardous material in the trash, but these items are known to start fires under certain conditions. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

πŸ’₯This weekend the Sheriff's Bomb Squad assisted the Simi Valley Police Department with the recovery of old military riot grenades. As is common in Ventura County, the family had been cleaning out the attic and came across a box belonging to a relative that hadn't been opened for nearly 30 years.

Upon discovering the box, the family did the correct thing by leaving it in place and calling 911. The Bomb Squad was able to collect the items and safely remove them from the home.

Although it may be tempting to hold onto a piece of history, it's better to be safe than sorry as these items are not only illegal to knowingly possess, but they can also become unstable over time. If you find yourself in a similar situation, it's best to evacuate the area, call 911, and allow the Bomb Squad to safely dispose of the items.

πŸ”₯ Last week the Sheriff's Bomb Squad and the Sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau bid farewell to Ventura County Fire Department Arson Investigator Christine Saqui after 30 years of dedicated service to the community.

Although a fire fighter, Investigator Saqui had been working directly alongside the Sheriff's Bomb Squad (sharing an office) since 2001. She proved police and fire fighters do get along! πŸ˜‚ Over those 25 years, Investigator Saqui assisted the Bomb Squad with the successful prosecution of countless arson and explosives cases. Investigator Saqui was well respected across the State of California for her amazing work ethic, and her expertise in determining the origin and cause of fires was unmatched.

Investigator Saqui was one of the Bomb Squads greatest advocates and we can't thank her enough for all she has done for our team. Thank you Christine for all your hard work, and most importantly, being such a great friend to the Bomb Squad. Although you are missed, we wish you great joy in your well deserved retirement! πŸ’£πŸ’₯

πŸ’₯This week the Sheriff's Bomb Squad was honored to host Academy Class 2025-2 at the bomb range for some explosives familiarization training. This type of training allows future officers and deputies the opportunity to experience the real-world hazards they may encounter out in the field and learn how to protect themselves and the public from explosive threats. Big thank you to Class 2025-2, we're looking forward to seeing you out in the field. πŸ’£
