When are standpipes usually required?
Standpipes are required in high-rise buildings, detention, correctional occupancies, airport terminals, and piers. Any stairwells that are in a building with two-three stories above grade, more than 50ft above grade, more than one store below grade, and more than 20ft below grade.

Standpipe's main purpose is to provide support in an emergency of fire. Can you guess how many standpipe systems there are? There are four different types.

According to the NFPA 14, standard defines a standpipe as an arrangement of piping, valves hose connections and allied equipment installed in a building or structure.

In 1979 California adopted the first fire sprinkler ordinance in the nation to require automatic residential fire sprinkler systems in newly constructed one to two family homes.
There are no mandates for older homes but we highly recommend you considering adding fire sprinklers to your home. Protect your property and your lives.
