The U.S. Forest Service is trying to roll back one of the most important protections for our national forests while shutting the public out of the process.
Adopted in 2001, the Roadless Area Conservation Rule turns 25 this year and continues to protect nearly 60 million acres of national forest, including 4.4 million acres in California.
Here in the Central Coast region, vast stretches of forest -- including areas around Nordhoff Peak, Reyes Peak, and areas across the Sespe Wilderness -- are protected by this rule. These pristine landscapes support wildlife, safeguard water quality, and power the outdoor recreation economy that our communities depend on.
Without these protections, we could see:
Increased wildfires from new roads (which are major sources of ignition)
Degraded water quality from erosion and run-off
Loss of critical habitat and wildlife
When the Roadless Rule was first created, the Forest Service held more than 400 public hearings across the country and received millions of public comments -- 95% of which were in support of protecting roadless areas.
Now, they are proposing to rescind these protections, likely without holding a single public hearing.
That's unacceptable. And if they won't hold hearings, we will.
In response to the U.S. Forest Service's failure to provide avenues for feedback, groups across the country are organizing community hearings to make sure our voices are heard.
Join us for one of two People's Town Halls to Protect Our Roadless Forests!
