This morning, Officers Valdez and Mejia had the privilege to participate in the Ventura County Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony’s Honor Guard, remembering and honoring local law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. This is also our opportunity to pay our respects to local peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, including one of our own, Officer James Doyle, EOW: 03/23/1975.

The VCCCD Police Department invites all students, faculty, staff, and the community to join us for a community presentation to share the required Annual Military Equipment Report and our Military Equipment Policy and inventory.
The report and corresponding community meeting are part of legislation intended to increase public transparency and provide government oversight when we seek to fund, acquire, and use military equipment as defined by statute. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns about our equipment, how it is used, and how it is funded.

Today we are remembering VCCCD Police Officer James Joseph Doyle, who was shot and killed in the line of duty 51 years ago today.
On March 23, 1975, Officer James Doyle was patrolling Ventura College, conducting building checks after a rash of burglaries, when he was shot and killed by a student positioned on the second floor of a building. After shooting Officer Doyle, the suspect stole his service revolver and patrol car, and fled the scene. The suspect was apprehended three days later in the State of Idaho after confronting an Idaho State Trooper. The suspect was convicted of murdering a peace officer and sentenced to life in prison on January 28, 1976.
Officer James Doyle was 24 years old and was a U.S. Army veteran, and was also a criminal justice student at Ventura College. Officer Doyle had two brothers who were Sheriff Deputies with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO), and had plans of joining the VCSO as well.
Officer Doyle was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by Ventura College on March 20, 2026.
To date, Officer James Joseph Doyle is the only VCCCD fallen officer killed in the line of duty. ⚫️🔵⚫️
