10/10/2026

Today, October 10th is Freedom Read Day.
The freedom to read is under unprecedented pressure in public and school libraries across the nation. According to recent data from the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom:
• 4,235 unique book titles were targeted for restriction or removal in a single year.
• Over 39% of challenged titles represent the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals and people of color.
• Nearly 92% of censorship attempts were driven by organized pressure groups targeting multi-book lists rather than individual parent requests.
Libraries exist to ensure that every individual has access to information, history, and diverse points of view. When access to books is restricted, our ability to think critically, learn from the past, and understand one another is diminished.

Frequently Challenged & Censored Titles:
📖 Gender Q***r: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe
📖 The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
📖 Sold by Patricia McCormick
📖 Looking for Alaska by John Green
📖 A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
📖 Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo
📖 A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

Freedom Read Day is a commitment to keeping open access, open minds, and open doors for everyone in our community.
Stop by the Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library, explore our catalog, and exercise your right to read freely.
