It is the Woodford County Conservation District's 80th anniversary this year and we have much to celebrate thanks to the commitment and example of people like Robert Richardson, a second generation Conservation District Supervisor who has been a valuable addition to our board since 2018 and has been farming his family's land full-time since he graduated high school. Robert is the fourth generation to steward several hundred acres between Clifton and Steel Rd. Robert is skilled at balancing financial and conservation management objectives - developing water resources everywhere he can and managing his soil for continued production (only tilling when necessary).
Robert reminded us during his interview that farmers in central Kentucky often get a bad wrap because of high phosphorous levels in water, even though most farmers don't apply phosphorous because soil levels are naturally high. Much of the limestone bedrock in Woodford County is what we call "phosphatic", due to calcium phosphate bonds formed 450+ million years ago when this area was ocean. The fertile soil that Robert now farms is the product of millions of years of weathering limestone.
