Doing our part to show appreciation to our incredible dispatchers during National Telecommunicators Week.
They are the steady voice on the other end of the line, the lifeline for our crews, and a critical part of every call we answer. We couldn’t do this job without you—thank you for all you do!

This week, our Heavy Rescue Team is hard at work delivering Swiftwater Rescue Technician certification—ensuring our region is prepared when conditions turn critical.
With water levels low locally, training doesn’t stop—it adapts. Today, our crews traveled to Wetumpka to find the conditions needed to provide realistic, hands-on instruction.
We’re proud to train alongside our partners from Bessemer Fire Department, Homewood Fire Department, and Mountain Brook Fire Department. Strong regional partnerships like these are what make our response capabilities stronger across the board.
Training doesn’t happen when it’s convenient—it happens when it’s necessary.

Crews were busy this morning supporting our Community Partners. Ladder 1 spent the morning in support of the Ronald McDonald House - Red Shoe Run: Rockin’ 5K in Southside. E5, R35, R31, and 5’s UTV provided event support and EMS standby for the Cookie Fix Cookie Crusher 5K / 10K in Cahaba Heights. Great turnout and community involvement at both events with lots of money raised for great charities. Between both events our services assisted over 1700 runners and countless numbers of event staff, ambassadors, and volunteers.

This week we welcomed 12 new firefighters to the department. They spent the week reviewing the fundamentals and will be in the field next week. VHFD was awarded a federal SAFER grant, which will offset much of the personnel costs for three years.
