On Saturday, September 26th firefighters and EMS first responders attended a Crash Vehicle Extrication Class, sponsored by Switzerland County EMA.

First responders from 4 southeastern Indiana counties participated in the class at the Bryant's Creek Boat Ramp in Switzerland County. In attendance were fire departments from Switzerland County, Ohio County, Ripley County, and Jefferson County. The class involved 3 crashed pickup truck scenarios. Each scenario was a different challenge for the first responders in using rescue skills in extricating victims that are entrapped in severely crashed vehicles.

The lead instructor for this class was Mike Sieverding. Mike is one of the top instructors in southeastern Indiana, and specializes in crashed vehicle extrication stabilization and different impressive rescue techniques. All the first responders that attended were challenged in different scenarios using specialized battery-operated extrication tools like spreaders, cutters and telescopic rams. Other tools that were used were stabilizer struts and jacks, cribbing, and power wenches. In all the first responders had quite a variety of equipment. Some of the equipment was furnished by 2 fire equipment vendors that attend the class. Vogelpohl Fire Equipment and Howell Rescue Systems.

As EMA Director of Switzerland County, I would like to THANK all the first responder personnel that attended this class on a beautiful Saturday morning. It takes a lot to volunteer in this kind of training and be away from family and friends on a weekend. It is deeply appreciated.

I would like to THANK Mike Sieverding in leading this class and giving us his knowledge and expertise. Also, I'd like to THANK Mike Rust from Vogelpohl Fire Equipment and Nick Meyers from Howell Rescue Systems for the use of the rescue equipment and their knowledge and rescue techniques.

A Special Thanks goes out to Todd's Wrecker Service from Versailles, Indiana, and Levi Towing and Recovery from Rising Sun, Indiana for donating the 3 vehicles used in this training. Also, I do not want to forget to THANK Chief Jeff Darling of the East Enterprise Fire Department for the use of the fire station number 2 in Florence. And of course, I can't forget to THANK Kable from the House of Brisket for the great food.
