It’s been a rough past few days here at FSRR. Constantly seeing animals who are suffering never gets any easier but this week we’ve just been rolling with the punches. 🫠
🐈 Thursday I picked up a little kitten (Dorito) who was hit by a car and had been suffering for 2 days. He was having frequent seizures and was covered in fleas and poo. Thankfully we were able to get him into the vet Friday morning for an exam. His seizures are finally under control and he is the absolute sweetest little guy.
🐁 Friday morning brought us a juvenile opossum who was attacked by another animal in a Three Rivers backyard. She does have a few puncture wounds we are treating but she has a great appetite and will hopefully make a full, quick recovery.
🐁 Friday afternoon we received another call for an injured opossum, this one in Portage. I got to the house as fast as I could but sadly it was already too late. She had probably one of the worst injuries I’ve seen on an animal (and I’ve seen some horrific things!). It appeared as though she was caught by a large dog or coyote and was almost completely disemboweled.
It was AWFUL 😭.
🐈 Friday evening I received an urgent call regarding a feral cat who had likely been hit and paralyzed by a vehicle. The older lady had been feeding “Lil Mama” for several years and was completely devastated. Unfortunately she disappeared before I could get there to help. Saturday morning I received another call informing she had returned so I raced up there to contain her. Sadly the damage to her hind end was definitely untreatable so I gave her an injection of sedative/pain relief and transported her to KCASE for euthanasia. 😞
🌈 💔 Rest easy Lil Mama, your life mattered.
Saturday morning we noticed that 2 of our injured adult raccoons were acting very unusual.
🦝 Dune, who was finishing up recovering from a broken foot was very lethargic, refused to eat and seemed to be in pain. After consulting with our veterinarian we provided fluids, a steroid injection and an antibiotic injection since we weren’t positive what was going on. Sadly he passed away later that day in his favorite hammock. We are absolutely devastated! He was so close to a full recovery 😭
We still have no idea what happened but plan on getting him over to MSU for a necropsy ASAP.
🌈💔 We love you Dune, rest easy and run free.
🦝 Holmes, who we suspect was a previous pet, is staying with us while he works on losing weight and wilding up. Unfortunately he has some of the same symptoms Dune had, we are doing everything possible to save his life. I’m currently making the 2.5hr drive to who I consider the best raccoon vet in state.
We are praying she can help him and it’s not too late 🙏🏻💔😭
This has been a tough year for us in so many ways. 😞
