Well, the snake season is just about over, so here is a recap of this year’s slithery action.
Much of it took place in early summer, when a group of water snakes enjoyed sunbathing on a fallen tree near the pond bridge. I posted the first batch of photos on June 18. By mid July, the tree had dried up, its foliage disappeared and with it the snakes (photo 1-3).
Earlier in April, I found a DeKay’s brownsnake on the trail from the pond to the wetlands (photo 4).
In August, I ran into a copperhead on the paved path between the Meadow kiosk and the lower creek bridge. But it was at dusk, so I took only two shots (photo 5 and 6).
The rest of the series comes from a Labor Day copperhead encounter on the trail near the pond info-board (which warns against copperheads). This fella was so well masked by dry leaves that a group of passersby could not see it even when I was pointing at it from about 10 ft (see the last photo).
