Press Release
VIENNA, WV — On Sunday, August 2, 2026, at approximately 8:14 p.m., officers with the Vienna Police Department responded to the 100 block of Grand Central Avenue following reports of shots fired involving two vehicles traveling northbound.
The preliminary investigation determined that occupants of both vehicles exchanged gunfire while the vehicles were in motion. Two occupants of one vehicle were struck by gunfire and sustained serious, life-threatening injuries. One victim was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown for additional medical treatment.
Responding officers quickly secured the scene, rendered medical aid to the injured individuals, and began gathering information from witnesses. During the investigation, officers identified one of the injured occupants, Ashton Elschlager of Walker, as one of the individuals involved in the exchange of gunfire.
Witness information further identified the second shooter as Jacob Thomas of Waverly, who fled the scene while continuing northbound on Grand Central Avenue. The information was immediately relayed to the surrounding law enforcement agencies. With assistance from the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Thomas’s vehicle was observed crossing the Williamstown Bridge into Marietta, Ohio. The information was then relayed to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, which quickly located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop without incident.
Vienna Police Department investigators responded to process the scene, collect evidence, and conduct numerous interviews. Investigators interviewed Ashton Elschlager, Jacob Thomas, and several key witnesses. These interviews confirmed that Elschlager and Thomas recklessly exchanged gunfire while traveling on a public roadway, placing numerous motorists and bystanders at risk of serious injury or death.
As a result of the investigation, Ashton Elschlager and Jacob Thomas were each charged with Wanton Endangerment, a felony offense. Elschlager is currently being held at the Wood County Holding Center, while Thomas is being held at the Washington County Jail.
The Vienna Police Department would like to thank the Parkersburg Police Department, Wood County Sheriff’s Office, West Virginia State Police, Williamstown Police Department, and Washington County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance throughout this investigation.
