Officials from the State of Indiana have notified the Knox County Health Department that mosquitoes in Knox County have tested positive for West Nile Virus. While it is not unusual to have mosquitoes in Knox County test positive for the West Nile Virus, it is important to be aware of the risks. Each year entomologists (insect scientists) from the State of Indiana set traps throughout the State to catch mosquitoes and to test them for the presence of West Nile Virus.

The West Nile Virus is carried by mosquitoes and humans may contract the illness by being bitten by an infected mosquito. The best way to prevent getting the virus is to avoid being bitten by the mosquito. This can be accomplished by using mosquito repellants such as DEET and by not being out after the sun goes down or before the sun comes up.

It is also important to take steps to remove or repair any potential items on your property that could be used as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This would include removing old tires, old containers or other items that can retain water, keeping grass cut short, cleaning clogged gutters, and emptying containers that are used to hold water at least once per week.

If an individual is bitten by a mosquito that contains West Nile Virus, only about 20 % of those bitten will develop any symptoms. The usual symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and malaise. More severe neurologic symptoms may occur in about 1 in every 150 people who are bitten.

The Knox County Health Officer, Dr. Alan Stewart, is not aware of any cases of West Nile Virus in humans occurring in Knox County in the past. While the risk of serious illness is quite low, precautions for prevention are relatively simple and should be followed.
