White oaks (Quercus alba) are keystone species in Indiana. They serve as vital wildlife habitats, produce high-fat acorns essential for local fauna, and support major regional industries like hardwood timber and bourbon. They are foundational for sustaining biodiversity in the Midwest. And are a wildlife Superfood. White oak acorns mature in a single season and have lower tannin levels than red oak acorns, making them highly palatable and a primary food source for deer, wild turkey, squirrels, and wood ducks. The trees host hundreds of insect and caterpillar species, providing crucial food for migrating neotropical birds. They are preferred nesting sites for the state-endangered Cerulean Warbler and provide critical roosting bark for the federally endangered Indiana bat. White oaks are among the most valuable timber trees in Indiana, heavily harvested for high-quality furniture, flooring, cabinetry, and veneer And barrels because the heartwood develops structures called tyloses that prevent liquid from passing through, it is legally required and highly prized for making bourbon and wine barrels. Despite making up a large percentage of mature canopy trees in Indiana state forests, there are very few young saplings (under 3.2%).Due to fire suppression and changes in woodland management, shade-tolerant species like sugar maple and American beech are overtaking the state's forests, preventing young, sun-loving white oaks from growing. Kirk and Becky Bouchie were kind enough to fund the first of 10 trees to be planted at area sites in the community in honor of the 250th anniversary celebration of the USA. The sites were selected with the idea that they have a high likelihood of remaining preserved for the potential life span of the trees. “200 to 300 years” The $10,000 raised to plant these first 10 trees will be used to apply for a matching grant this fall. Those funds will be used to plant additional groves. The remaining donors for the initial 10 trees and planting locations are.
