Voter Registration & Elections (http://www.vbgov.com/voter) maintains the current registration and elections process for Virginia Beach voters and meets mandatory state and federal standards for access to voter registration, such as the regulations of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). The National Voter Registration Act necessitated a joint program with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), as a result voter registration can be completed in any DMV Customer Service Center. Our Office handles mail registration sites at the Virginia Beach U.S. Post Office locations, recreation centers, public libraries, and City Treasurer's offices. The Office also provides convenient ways for citizens to register to vote, update their voter registration record, vote by absentee ballot, and pursue their candidacy for office, and is responsible for maintaining and checking the campaign financial reports of all local candidates. Our Electoral Board is responsible for the conduct of the elections and for the verification of election results. The General Registrar and Director of Elections of the City of Virginia Beach is Christine Lewis. She can be reached at (757) 385-8683, or by email at [email protected].

On a recent visit Girl Scout Troop 323 got to tour our office and learn about the voting process. While visiting our voting room they were able to see how voters are checked in and ballots are cast. They viewed sample ballots showing what races are on this November's ballot. They got to participate in a mock election towards the end of their visit. They will be voters in just a few short years. We hope this visit ignited a spark that leads to them becoming lifelong voters. Thank you, Ms. Loren, and Troop 323.

A 13 October 1775 resolution of the Continental Congress established what is now the United States Navy with “a swift sailing vessel, to carry ten carriage guns, and a proportionable number of swivels, with eighty men, be fitted, with all possible dispatch, for a cruise of three months….” After the American War of Independence, the U.S. Constitution empowered the new Congress “to provide and maintain a navy.” Acting on this authority, Congress established the Department of the Navy on 30 April 1798.
