Here the students are investigating the direct forces of push and pull and part of their Force and Motion Unit in Science. The goal is to stay in their gameboard and push or pull the stuffed animal onto the black X coding the Dash robot with an IPAD to do the pushing or pulling. If the robot or stuffed animal goes outside their gameboard, they die and have to regenerate back on the starting X. They record whether or not the robot pushed or pulled or a combination of both on a student data recording sheet.

The school garden is really getting a fall feel to it. We have onions, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, collard greens and more growing in the garden. The fence repairs are coming along. The school Garden Club is in full swing on Tuesdays after school.

Last spring our garden fence started falling over, the posts were rotting off at the top of the concrete they were set it. The concrete didn't come up high enough to prevent the rot. This week Mr. Rickard started replacing the posts to get the fence backup. Replaced two posts yesterday.. Two more posts to go at least.

The Garden Club is starting to come together. We have 10 students signed up. We also have to parent volunteers helping this year. Love seeing the parents working with their children. Yesterday we got out hands dirty in both the courtyard and bus loop garden.

Today Mr. Rickard kicked of the September Science Lab lesson for our Third Graders. Each class visits him in the science lab once a month. Their first science unit in third grade is how things interact with water. This month's lab lesson is on the myth that salt disappears when it dissolves.
They look at salt under a microscope. Then measure the mass of a container of water. Pour salt in without stirring and measure the mass again. The mass is recorded each time. Then they stir the salt in and measure the mass again.

They see the mass is the same between the water with salt at the bottom and with the salt dissolved. Therefore the salt did not disappear. It just broke down into really tiny pieces.

Then they look at salt water under a microscope and find the tiny bits of salt confirming that its still there.
