Piper's Opera House A Virginia City, Nevada staple, Piper's Opera House is a historic performing arts venue for weddings, concerts, meetings and events. Tours available. Hours vary.

Visit online or call for details. From the 1860s until 1920s, Piper's Opera House attracted famous stars from Europe and the United States and is listed by the League of Historic Theaters. It is one of the most significant vintage theaters on the West Coast. The opera house was condemned in 1920 and went dark for 20 years. In 1940 the family reopened the house as a museum. Significant restoration was done in the late 1960s by Louise Zimmer Driggs (Piper's great granddaughter). In the 1970s Mrs. Zimmer again reopened the opera house and maintained an active theater and summer concert series through the mid-1980s, at which time family finances and wear and tear on the building forced them to finally close the house. In 1997 the Piper/Zimmer family sold the opera house to Piper's Opera House Programs, Inc., a nonprofit organization established to purchase the opera house. Archeological digs were funded by several sources, and restructuring of foundation support were conducted. In 1999 Piper's Opera House was again reopened as a working museum. Restoration of the grand old structure continues with grant funding, and public tours support the daily operations of the House.

The Nevada Statehood Ball returns Saturday, Oct. 31 at Piper’s Opera House for a Victorian Fancy Dress Masquerade filled with live music, dancing, and historic atmosphere.

Guests are encouraged to lean into the masquerade feel with character-inspired Victorian attire, dramatic masks, and a little imagination.

Eye of Rie will also be offering 5×7 tintype portraits throughout the evening, giving guests the chance to take home a truly fitting keepsake from the night.

In the 19th century, Piper’s Opera House was one of the West’s celebrated entertainment destinations, known for performances, theatrical productions, and elaborate social gatherings.
But the building you see today is actually the third Piper’s Opera House.

The original theater was destroyed by fire in 1875. Owner John Piper rebuilt, opening a grand new theater in 1878. Then, in February 1883, that building also burned — following a masked ball.

The current Opera House opened in 1885 and has endured for more than 140 years, continuing to host performances, celebrations, events, and visitors from near and far.

The flames are long gone. The stories, not so much. 🕯️🎭

Celebrate Nevada’s history with an evening that feels made for Piper's Opera House. ✨

The 2026 Nevada Statehood Ball returns Saturday, Oct. 31, inviting guests to dress in Victorian formal wear and enjoy hors d’oeuvres, dancing, and live music from Renegade Orchestra inside one of Virginia City, NV’s most historic venues.

Doors open at 6:30 PM, with the ball running from 7–10 PM.
