John Boyd Thacher State Park in New York's Capital Region is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, a disc golf course, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with eight reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. The Visitor Center located at Thacher State Park has geological and historical exhibits showcasing the Helderberg Escarpment and its importance on the region. The visitor center has activities for children and adults alike, along with two rentable spaces. There is a conference room for groups under 25, and the Helderberg Room which offers stunning views and a premiere space for weddings and larger celebrations or gatherings. Sport climbing is available with a completed John Boyd Thacher State Park Risk Climbing Waiver permit. Camping is available at this park at Thompson's Lake Campground, which features 140 campsites with options of private wooded sites and open, adjacent sites. Sites can accommodate tents or RVs and are all close to restroom and shower facilities. Wild Play Adventure Course: This new adventure course offers 15 zip lines, 60 aerial games, and a 40-foot jump. The Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center is located two miles from the Overlook on Thompson's Lake. The center offers exhibits, interactive displays, trails for hiking and skiing, snowshoe rentals, and educational programs.

The Trails Specialist is a full-time, year-round, long term seasonal position that will assist with trail project planning and implementation at Mine Kill State Park. The intent of this position is to help NYS Parks to fulfill goals for trail construction and maintenance as previously identified in strategic planning documents. This will be a multi-year endeavor, with year one primarily focused on design and planning.⚒️

Starting October 12, 2026, the Warming Hut at Hop Field will be open daily 7:30am-4pm. The Warming Hut will be closed from 10am-1pm on Mondays for school groups. Warming Hut restrooms are open daily year-round. Special permits are available for private events and rentals, contact the park office at 518-872-1237.

The transition to stunning fall colors quickened over the past week and is expected to bring pockets of peak foliage to six of New York State’s 11 vacation regions this weekend. Joining the Adirondacks, which has already seen some peak conditions, localized peak colors will pop up in parts of the Capital-Saratoga, Catskills, Central New York, Finger Lakes, and Chautauqua-Allegheny regions.

Recently we were lucky enough to have had a special meeting and visit to Thacher Park! ♥

We were lucky enough to welcome some descendants/Nieces of John Boyd Thacher it was so nice getting to meet them and share a little time together!

It was pretty special seeing our Thacher Park family connect with the Thacher family! We're so glad they stopped by and hope they enjoyed their visit as much as we did!
