By July your hands had calluses thick enough that a splinter didn't even register anymore. The tractor made its slow pass through the field and you learned the rhythm fast — bend, lift, toss, straighten, repeat, for hours, under a sun that didn't care how tired you were. Your dad never once asked if you wanted to work that day. He just handed you gloves and pointed at the field. You complained the whole time and secretly you were proud of every blister. Nobody handed you a trophy for it. The work itself was the point.
