Tonight’s training session was simulating a fire on the other side of the bridge so we can practice proper truck placement and how to get water flowing as quick as possible because the bridge creates a barrier. Our trucks are too heavy to go through the bridge so we have to utilize a few techniques to run a hose through it. We have one truck hooked to the hydrant and the hose is fed through the bridge, by hand, that is hooked to two trucks on the other side. With all three trucks we are able to get water supply to the ski club. You will see that there are a few times we had huddles near the truck. Our firefighters are collaborating and deliberating on best practices. Now we have a plan that allows us to quickly start fighting a fire. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and understanding as we had the bridge closed. We appreciate your support!

🚨PUBLIC NOTICED🚨

Bridge Street in Waitsfield will be closed next Wednesday, September 2 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM for training. All residents living on Bridge Street will be able to travel to their homes at this time. All through traffic will need to go around.

As most people know, our fire apparatus is unable to travel through the cover bridge due to height and weight restrictions. This training will be focusing on utilizing hydrants near the covered bridge without driving through it.

For years we have preplanned how to extinguish fires on the other side of the bridge, but luckily have never had to execute these plans. This is why we feel it is time to physically practice these plans.

We appreciate the public understanding and apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may put on individuals and families.

Who says training has to be serious all the time? Tonight’s training was SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) dodge ball. Some of Moretown Fire departments members came and joined us as we practiced using the SCBAs in a high activity situation. When on scene of a fire call, the more we are aware of our breathing, the longer the compressed breathing air will last and the longer we can fight the fire. Dodge ball gets our hearts pumping but allows us to focus on how we are using our air bottles in a lower stress situation. It’s an added bonus that it’s also fun!

Tonight’s training is practicing pulling hose efficiently when we have a fire and then repacking it correctly so it’s ready for the next call. There is a very strategic way each hose is packed so we have the fastest access when we need it!
