On Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Wakefield Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day at Wakefield’s Public Safety Building, located at 1 Union Street. At this event, the community can bring tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs for safe disposal.

For sixteen years, this national event has helped Americans safely dispose of unneeded medications—those that are old, unwanted, or expired—to prevent drug misuse and abuse. Take Back Day offers free and anonymous disposal of unneeded medications at over 4,200 drop-off locations nationwide. In partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back Day has removed more than 20.4 million pounds of medication from circulation since its inception.

Collection sites cannot accept syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The cap must be tightly sealed to prevent leakage. For more information or to find additional collection sites near you, visit www.DEATakeBack.com.

*October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month*

This weekend, members of the Wakefield Police Department were proud to participate in the WAAV Strides for Safety Road Race, supporting the Wakefield Alliance Against Violence and its ongoing mission to raise awareness and help end domestic violence in our community.

Officers Amy Rando, Joe Lyons, Matt Surette, and Olivia Fuller, along with WPD Clinician Jennifer and Domestic Violence Advocate Mollie, took part in the race in support of this important cause.

Officer Matt Surette was also joined by and led recruits from the Lynnfield MPTC 9th ROC, who came out to run and show their support.

We are grateful to WAAV, the participants, volunteers, sponsors, and community members who helped make this year’s Strides for Safety another successful event.

Together, we continue to take strides toward a community free from domestic violence. For a list of DV resources, you can visit our website or WAAV’s at https://waavonline.org/resources/

Child Passenger Safety Week | September 20–26

Need help making sure your child’s car seat is installed correctly? Stop by the Wakefield Police Department this Thursday 9/24 from 4:30–6:30 PM during our drop-in hours for assistance with child passenger safety and car seat installation. No appointment necessary!

This week, the Wakefield Police Department reminds parents and caregivers that keeping our youngest passengers safe starts with making sure they are riding in the right seat, installed the right way, every trip.

As children grow, their car seat needs change. A few important reminders:

• Choose a car seat or booster based on your child’s age, height and weight, and always follow the seat manufacturer’s limits.
• Keep children rear-facing as long as permitted by their car seat’s height and weight limits.
• When your child outgrows a forward-facing harness, transition to a booster seat until the vehicle seat belt fits properly.
• Make sure harness straps are snug, flat and properly positioned.
• Check that your car seat is installed securely and always read both the car seat manual and vehicle owner’s manual.
• Children should ride properly restrained in the back seat through age 12.
• Check your car seat’s expiration date and register it with the manufacturer so you receive important recall information.

📏 Massachusetts Law: Children must be properly secured in a federally approved child passenger restraint until they are 8 years old OR taller than 57 inches (4’9”).

Not sure whether your child is in the right seat? There are excellent resources available here: https://www.nhtsa.gov/

A properly selected and installed car seat can make a lifesaving difference. Take a few minutes this week to make sure your child is riding safely.

Right Seat. Right Fit. Every Ride. 🚙💙
