🎃 A little planning. A safer Halloween. As October approaches, Walhalla Rescue Squad encourages families to make safety part of their Halloween traditions!

📍 PLAN YOUR ROUTE
Choose your trick-or-treat route ahead of time. Walk together, use sidewalks where available, and cross streets at designated crossings.

🔦 LIGHT THE WAY
Bring flashlights or glow sticks, and add reflective tape to costumes and bags so drivers can spot you more easily.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 CHOOSE A MEETING PLACE
Pick an easy-to-find location in case your group becomes separated. Make sure children know their accompanying adult’s name and phone number.

🚗 WATCH FOR LITTLE GHOSTS AND GOBLINS
Drivers, slow down, put distractions away, and watch carefully for children near streets, driveways, and parked vehicles.

A few minutes of planning can help keep the focus on costumes, candy, and making memories. 🧡

Always glad to train with our neighbors! Thanks to everyone who joined us.

Training together to better serve our communities! 🚒⚕️⛑️

Eleven responders from Mountain Rest Rescue Squad, Mountain Rest Fire Department, Long Creek Fire Department, and Walhalla Fire Department participated in an HSI Basic Life Support (BLS) class.

This training helps strengthen lifesaving skills and the teamwork our responders rely on during emergencies.

Thank you to Walhalla Rescue Chief Land and Asst. Chief Cruz for being our instructors and everyone who took the time to train. Working together across departments helps us better serve our neighbors when they need us most!

💧 Keeping Our Responders Ready! 🚑

When the call comes in, our volunteers never know what the next few minutes—or the next several hours—may bring. Staying hydrated is an important part of keeping our responders safe and ready to serve.

Walhalla Rescue Squad is proud to have been selected as a recipient of the 2026 DripDrop Hydration Giveback Campaign!

A huge thank you to DripDrop and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) for donating DripDrop electrolyte drink mix to our squad. These supplies will be placed on our response vehicles and available to our volunteers during training, emergency responses, and those long, hot Upstate South Carolina days.

Support like this helps take care of the volunteers who dedicate their time to taking care of our community.

Thank you, DripDrop and NVFC, for supporting Walhalla Rescue Squad and volunteer emergency responders across the country! 💧🚑

🚨 Exciting News from Walhalla Rescue Squad! 🚨

We’re proud to introduce the newest addition to our fleet — Rescue 4 Charlie! 🚑

Rescue 4 Charlie is a 2013 Ford Expedition that is no stranger to serving the citizens of South Carolina. We recently acquired her from Taylors Fire & Rescue and brought her a little deeper into the Upstate to continue doing what she was built to do — serve others in their time of need.

Rescue 4 Charlie has been upfitted and equipped to respond to a variety of emergencies throughout our community.

But there’s still one important thing missing…

👉 YOU!

Walhalla Rescue Squad is an all-volunteer organization, and we need more dedicated people willing to step up and serve their community. Whether responding to medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, fires, searches, or other calls for help, our volunteers make a difference every day.

No experience? Don’t let that stop you. Training is provided!

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering or simply want to learn more about what we do, now is a great time to get involved.

🇺🇸 250 Years of Freedom. One Community. One Commitment. 🇺🇸

Today, our nation celebrates an incredible milestone—250 years since the birth of the United States of America. From 1776 to today, generations of Americans have answered the call to serve their country and their communities. We are honored to carry on that tradition here in Oconee County.

As you spend today making memories with family and friends, take a moment to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy and the sacrifices made to preserve them. It’s a privilege that we never take for granted.

The members of Walhalla Rescue Squad are proud to serve this community. Whether your holiday is filled with backyard barbecues, time on the lake, or watching fireworks under the Carolina sky, know that we’ll be standing by, ready to answer the call if we’re needed.

We hope your Independence Day is filled with laughter, gratitude, and pride in the nation we all call home.

From our rescue squad family to yours, Happy Independence Day and Happy 250th Birthday, America! 🇺🇸

❤️🤍💙 Serving Walhalla. Serving Oconee County. Serving America. 💙🤍❤️

🚑🐰 We’d like to introduce our newest responder… “Hops.” He showed up unannounced, geared up, and ready to go to work. Didn’t ask for a pager… just grabbed a basket and said he’s “on duty.”

So far, performance review is solid:
✔ Fast on scene
✔ Good attitude
✔ Brings snacks

All jokes aside this is what we’re about. Serving our community, having each other’s backs, and being ready when it matters most.

👉 If you’ve ever thought about joining, we’d love to have you. Apply today with Walhalla Rescue Squad.

SC Forestry Commission to issue statewide burning ban, effective at 4 p.m. today

COLUMBIA—The South Carolina Forestry Commission is issuing a State Forester’s Burning Ban for all counties, effective at 4 p.m. today.

A State Forester’s Burning Ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including yard debris burning, prescribed burning, campfires, bonfires and other recreational fires in all unincorporated areas of the state.

The ban does not apply to fires used for the preparation of food or fires used in appropriate enclosures (portable outdoor fireplaces, chimineas or permanent fire pits constructed of stone, masonry, metal or other noncombustible material that conforms with all applicable South Carolina fire codes).

Forestry Commission officials say weather conditions over the next several days present a greatly elevated potential for fires igniting easily and spreading rapidly. Dangerously low relative humidities – reaching below 20% in some areas – combined with extremely dry fuels statewide and gusty winds will create a particularly volatile mix of wildfire risk factors throughout the weekend.

"In addition to the intensifying drought conditions, the weather we’re going to see statewide over the next several days makes it ripe for any fire that starts to burn intensely and move fast,” SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones said. "While these conditions can make wildfires ignite easily anywhere and make it more challenging for firefighters to contain, we’re really concerned about areas where events like Hurricane Helene and recent ice damage have led to higher amounts of fuel. This burning ban is necessary to limit ignitions to the maximum extent possible to prevent severe wildfires for public safety purposes."

The ban will stay in effect until further notice, which will come in the form of an official announcement from the Forestry Commission.

❄️ Walhalla looks beautiful under a blanket of snow — but conditions on the ground can be very different.

Please remember that roads may still be icy, especially on bridges, shaded areas, and secondary roads. Slow down, increase your following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel if you can.

With freezing temperatures continuing, check on neighbors, bring pets inside, and be mindful of space heaters and generators.

Walhalla Rescue Squad is here if you need us — but your best safety tool is prevention. Stay warm, stay alert, and stay safe. 🚑
