Twenty-five years ago today, an ordinary Tuesday morning became a day America would never forget.

Nearly 3,000 people went to work, boarded airplanes, reported for duty, and said goodbye to their families, never knowing how profoundly the world was about to change.

Today, we remember every life taken on September 11, 2001 — those lost in New York City, at the Pentagon, and aboard all four aircraft. We remember the passengers and crew of Flight 93, whose extraordinary courage in the skies over Pennsylvania prevented another attack. And we remember the families whose lives were forever changed.

As members of the public-safety family, we hold especially close the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers, and other first responders who answered the call.

While thousands were desperately trying to escape the danger, they went toward it.

They climbed the stairs. They treated the injured. They guided strangers to safety. They answered the radio. They did the job they had sworn to do — and hundreds never came home. Many more would suffer and die in the years that followed from illnesses connected to their service.

But September 11 also reminds us of something else:

America came together.

We were wounded. We were grieving. But we were united.

Strangers helped strangers. Americans donated blood, supported first responders, raised our flag, prayed together, and asked, “What can I do?”

For a time, the things that divided us seemed smaller than the things that bound us together.

We were Americans.

Twenty-five years later, may we remember the lives we lost, honor those who answered the call, and never forget how a nation stood together in one of its darkest hours.

🇺🇸 We Remember. We Honor. We Stand Together.
