Duke Energy and county officials will test the outdoor warning sirens around the Oconee Nuclear Station between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026.

This is only a test to ensure they are functioning properly, sirens will sound for three minutes. Anyone who hears a siren during scheduled testing does not need to take action.

During testing, some sirens may be tested more than once. Follow-up testing after siren maintenance may be required after 1 p.m.

Because this is a test, local broadcasting stations will not interrupt regular programming to broadcast Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages. If there was a real emergency requiring the sirens to be sounded, local radio and television stations would broadcast information to the public.

Duke Energy owns and maintains a network of sirens within 10 miles of each of its nuclear plants, including 65 sirens around the Oconee Nuclear Station. Testing is performed in cooperation with emergency management officials in Oconee and Pickens counties, who are responsible for sounding the sirens.

Additional details about outdoor warning sirens and nuclear emergency preparedness are available at duke-energy.com/NuclearEP

Outdoor warning sirens will be tested today, October 7, around all Duke Energy nuclear plants. This testing is part of normal maintenance to make sure they’re working properly and conducted in conjunction with state and county officials. Today’s siren test will be a full-volume test and last for approximately 3 minutes. Some sirens may be tested more than once. Follow-up testing after the regularly scheduled siren maintenance time may be required.

No public action is required.

Greenville, Pickens and Oconee Counties Partner with SC-HART for Multi-County Rescue Training

Residents in portions of Greenville, Pickens and Oconee counties may notice increased helicopter and emergency response activity during the week of Oct. 5-9 as the South Carolina Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (SC-HART) conducts a multi-county training exercise.

SC-HART brings together specially trained rescue personnel and aviation resources to perform rescues in difficult-to-access environments, including mountainous terrain and land and water-based incidents. The exercise will bring state, regional and local resources together to practice helicopter rescue operations and strengthen coordination among responding agencies. Regular training helps ensure rescue personnel, aviation crews and local responders are prepared to work together safely and effectively when an actual emergency occurs. Residents should take comfort in knowing these teams are training in the Upstate, so they are prepared if a rescue is needed in these communities.

Residents may see helicopters flying at lower altitudes, emergency response vehicles and personnel, or other activity associated with the exercise. This is planned training activity and should not cause alarm.

Specific exercise locations will not be released to help maintain a safe and controlled training environment.
