Hunters, farmers and members of the Kent County Deer Management Coalition delivered more than 1,000 pounds of locally harvested venison to the West Michigan Veteran's Assistance Program, providing approximately 4,000 meals for veterans and their families.

The donation came from deer harvested across more than 6,800 acres of private agricultural properties through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) crop damage permit program. Approximately 50 of the 150 deer harvested were donated through the DNR's Hunters Feeding Michigan partnership with the Coalition. An anonymous financial contribution made it possible to keep half of the donated venison in Kent County rather than having it distributed across the state.
The effort demonstrates how recommendations from Grand Valley State University's deer management study are being put into action.

Other Coalition initiatives include the launch of Deer Connections, a pilot program connecting hunters with property owners to expand hunting access and opportunities for venison sharing.

The Kent County Road Commission has also added late-season roadside mowing to improve visibility of deer near the edge of the road and help address vehicle-deer crashes. This is particularly important during the fall breeding season, known as the rut, when deer are more active and frequently on the move.
