Lucky Peak Dam was named after a successful gold mining camp about three miles north of the planned project footprint, just downstream of Arrowrock. Around the same time, The Bureau of Reclamation began construction of Anderson Ranch Dam, 42 miles upstream of Arrowrock Dam.

Since construction was completed in 1955, Lucky Peak is estimated to have prevented over a billion dollars of flood damage.

Always wear an engine cutoff device and a life jacket. If you capsize, stay with your boat, unless the shore is very close. The lake’s shore may look easy to reach, but often cold water, waves, current, exhaustion, or injury can make the swim deadly.

The River and Harbor Act of 1945 authorized the construction of four dams on the lower Snake River. Construction of Little Goose Lock and Dam began in the summer of 1965.

Originally, Little Goose Lock and Dam was to be built near Little Goose Island. However, once the final location and pool height were decided for Lower Monumental, Little Goose was moved slightly downriver from its original site.

Despite the remote location, the concrete structure of the dam was completed in just four years. The earthfill portion of the dam on the north shore was constructed in the winter of 1969 and completed by early 1970.

Did you receive a letter from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers?

The letter is part of long-planned land survey associated with the Federal Columbia River Power System. This work helps the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers meet federal responsibilities near its dam and reservoir projects.

USACE is requesting voluntary written permission for a small group of archaeologists to walk the property and visually observe the ground surface.

No digging or ground disturbance is planned.

The letter does not — and cannot — authorize entry onto private property. Participation is voluntary, and landowners may ask questions or decline access.

Did you know that the Snake River flooded three times during the construction of Lower Monumental? The first time was in December 1964, followed by two more floods in January and April 1965. The flooding severely damaged "LoMo's" cofferdam during each event, with a total estimated loss of $6 million. Flood events on the Snake River delayed construction by about a year. Fortunately, these events did not result in injuries.
