Most of the volunteers from Commerce Township joined Company I of the Michigan 22nd. Here are the names and graves of the members of Company I who died and are buried at Andersonville prison. Thaddous Ryno from Novi died 9/28/1864, Henry Sutton from Milford, died 10/21/1864, Myron Hodges from Brighton died 11/3/1864. All these men were captured at Chickamauga on September 20 1863. Andersonville didn't open until late February 1864. Most likely these prisoners would have spent time at prisons in Virginia. The Detroit Free Press article from October 19 1863 includes a soldier named Alfred Skinner I am happy to announce that Alfred Judson Skinner from Pontiac escaped while being transfered to Andersonville on 5/10/1864. Less than .1% of prisoners at Andersonville escaped. Alfred Skinner lived to be 81 years old.

While visiting Andersonville National Cemetery I discovered that one young man from Commerce died at the prison and is buried in the cemetery. Charles J Nash was living in Commerce having married Sarah Phillips on Christmas day 1861. He was 26 when he mustered into the 22nd Michigan at Pontiac, Michigan. Like many who died at Andersonville he died of diarrhea due to over crowding and a lack of a clean water source. He is buried in grave number 2077. His picture was taken from a public family tree on ancestry.

Was able to visit the 22nd Michigan Infantry Monument at the Chickamauga and Chattanooga Battlefield. The 22nd Michigan Infantry was made up of volunteers from Oakland County many from Commerce Township. On September 20th the last day of the battle the 22nd was on Horseshoe Ridge. That is where they placed their monument.
