A major national conservation honor for CPC's very own Mary Anne Piacentini! 🌾

Our President and CEO has been named the 2026 recipient of the Honorable Cornelius Amory Pugsley Medal, one of the nation's most prestigious honors in parks and conservation!

Administered by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) in partnership with the National Park Foundation, the medal has recognized conservation leaders for nearly a century. Mary Anne joins an extraordinary group of past recipients, including Lady Bird Johnson, Laurance Rockefeller, former U.S. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt, and Houston conservationist Terry Hershey.

We couldn't be prouder to see Mary Anne's decades of dedication to protecting Southeast Texas' coastal prairies, wetlands, farms, and ranches recognized on the national stage.

Hear from Mary Anne as she reflects on CPC's work and the many people and partners who have made it all possible. 💚

Research in the field often means expecting the unexpected! Dr. Paul Crump with Texas Parks and Wildlife is currently researching the rare Western Chicken Turtle on the Katy Prairie. 🐢 Little is known about this elusive turtle that lives in prairie pothole wetlands, so Dr. Paul Crump set up motion-activated camera traps to investigate. Unfortunately, a camera went missing (we suspect our grazing cattle may have something to do with that 🐮) this summer. Earlier this month, this Western Chicken Turtle camera was successfully replaced!

If you are interested in conducting field research on the Katy Prairie, we’d love to hear from you! Reach out to us at [email protected]

We have a new resident at the Indiangrass Preserve! 🐊

This young American Alligator, estimated to be about four feet long, has taken up residence in the ponds surrounded by our ADA-accessible Twin Ponds trail.

If you spot her during your visit, please give her plenty of space, stay on the trails and enjoy her from a safe distance. Do not approach, feed, or harass her, and please do not swim in the ponds.

It’s official: All 12 of the Coastal Prairie Conservancy’s proposed Major Thoroughfare and Freeway Plan amendments (MTFP) amendments have been adopted! 🥳

Houston City Council approved the 2026 MTFP Plan on Wednesday, 9/30/26, marking the final step in this year’s MTCP process. With Council’s approval, all 12 amendments proposed by the Coastal Prairie Conservancy have now been officially adopted, helping us better align future roadway planning with permanently conserved lands on the Katy Prairie.

This milestone was a community effort. 112 people submitted public comments during the MTFP process supporting the Coastal Prairie Conservancy. Many more attended public meetings, contacted public officials, shared information with friends and neighbors, and followed this process every step of the way.

To everyone who participated: thank you. 💚

We are also grateful to the City of Houston, Houston Planning Commission, Harris County Engineering, Waller County Engineering, and the public officials and staff who worked with CPC throughout this process.

Thank you for showing up for the Katy Prairie and helping ensure permanently conserved lands were represented in the public planning process.

When the sun goes down, our trail cameras catch all the wildlife activity across the prairie. From owls keeping watch to rabbits and raccoons on the move, preserved habitats give native species a safe place to thrive.

Happy National Hunting and Fishing Day 2026! 🌾🦆🐟

Conservation keeps these outdoor traditions alive. The Coastal Prairie Conservancy supports responsible hunting and fishing as critical ways to connect people with the land, wildlife, and conservation efforts.

The historic Katy Prairie provides critical wintering and stopover habitat for ducks and other migratory waterfowl traveling along the Central Flyway. To help the next generation get outdoors, CPC and the Texas Wildlife Association are hosting our annual youth hunt, Feathers on the Flyway, this December!

Beyond the hunt, young participants will gain hands-on experience with:

Waterfowl identification
Fi***rm safety & shot selection
Conservation & ethics
Field care

Give a young hunter the chance to learn, explore, and experience the outdoors while enjoying great food, camaraderie, and campfire memories.

Ever wondered what those small camouflage boxes on the trees are when you’re walking the trails?

Here’s a quick peek behind the scenes at Indiangrass Preserve with Izzy:

Trail Counters: The small, sleek sensors mounted near trailheads use an infrared beam to track visitor counts and help monitor trail usage — no camera involved!
Trail Cams: The mounted game cameras with lenses are set up to capture local wildlife roaming the preserve.

Next time you spot a trail cam, give it a quick “Hi Izzy!”
