𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗜𝗧 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 (𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘): An unfounded report of two young children jumping into the Passaic River this afternoon apparently was the result of a misunderstanding born out of genuine concern.
The rush began when a caller told police that she’d seen two people each jump into the water – one off the Passaic Street bridge on the Passaic side and the other off the Garfield side around 1 p.m. (Fri., Aug. 14th), Passaic Mayor Hector Carlos Lora told Independent Online News.
She believed them to be youngsters, he said.
As it turned out, "two adults, a male and female, were picking up cans near the river in Garfield," Lora said.
They hadn't even gone into the water, he said.
Garfield and Wallington firefighters had already launched boats. Meanwhile, police were checking cameras on both sides of the river.
Responders got to the truth almost immediately and the search was called off.
Initial sensitivity was heightened, of course, following the drowning deaths of a girl and boy, both 10 years old, in the river late last month.

A friend of the caller told Independent Online News early this evening that the woman "believed it was two teenagers, as they were small in size, and asked the police to just stop by to make sure they weren’t kids.
"The police took the case seriously due to the recent drownings, had the woman drive with them to identify if she sees the teenagers," said the friend, a 27-year-old special education teacher from Wallington who spoke on condition of anonymity. "When the adults (not teenagers) were found safe police thanked her efforts for calling in because it could have been an emergency.
"There could have need an accent barrier but no one, including the police, were confused about what was said in the phone call," the friend told Independent Online News. "The call was never hung up but she asked the police to make this an anonymous report.
"I’m glad she did do anonymous as I’m seeing inaccurate information and people accusing of false reporting and needing to be charged."
