This month’s training consisted of drafting operations. Drafting is when the engine’s pump is used to draw water from a body of water. We have a “senior” member who ensures we practice this once a year. He always says, “One day we are going to need this, you watch!” Drafting is an uncommon pump operation in our area and is usually utilized in rural areas with no fire hydrants. However, this technique can be utilized in our area, such as during flooding when hydrants are inaccessible, or during a large water main break, which does occur from time to time. It was a good training for all, especially our new MPOs in training.

Last evening our members, along with the rest of the department, attended the borough’s 9/11 memorial service and 9/11 monument dedication. Following the service, members attended our borough’s high school football game, which was dedicated in honor of all first responders. Our department members, alongside the police department, held our country’s flag over the field during the national anthem in honor of all first responders and those who perished in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Last evening we were contacted by a local resident whose uncle was visiting from Slovakia. After serving more than 30 years as a firefighter before retiring, he asked to visit and tour our firehouse.

Visits like this are common when firefighters travel and are a valued part of the fire service brotherhood.

He was given a tour of our apparatus and firehouse. He was very interested in the differences in equipment and apparatus compared with those used in his home country and learned a little about how our department operates.

He was especially excited to see our rescue truck, which is built on a Volvo chassis—a common chassis for fire apparatus in many European countries.

Our brother from overseas left our firehouse with smile, good experience, and a department patch.

You’re welcome back anytime Marek!
