🎉 Walk N Roll has officially launched in West Contra Costa County!

On September 23, students at Harding Elementary in El Cerrito and Verde Elementary in North Richmond walked, biked and rolled to school as part of new Walk N Roll programs!

Walk N Roll encourages active transportation, healthy habits and safer trips to school. None of it would be possible without the school staff, program coordinators (thank you, Contra Costa County Health) and community volunteers who showed up early to welcome students, hand out resources and cheer everyone on. 👏

Thank you to everyone who helped make these launches a success. We can’t wait to see the programs grow! 🚶‍♀️🚲🛴

🚍 CCTA is pleased to announce that Transit Ready is officially underway in Contra Costa County.

Transit Ready is a free countywide program helping older adults and people with disabilities build the skills and confidence to use public transportation more independently.

The program was developed with the help of our transit operators, transportation service providers and community partners — bringing together the people who operate our transportation system, the organizations that serve our communities and the residents who use these services every day.

Through free, hands-on sessions, participants can learn and practice skills including trip planning, reading transit schedules, using Clipper, riding the bus and BART, and understanding the transportation options available throughout Contra Costa County.

And the launch was just the beginning. Free Transit Ready sessions are now being offered at community locations across the county and online.

CCTA is exploring whether to invest in an adaptive cycling program for Contra Costa County residents with disabilities, and community input will help guide what comes next.

Adaptive cycles, including handcycles, recumbent foot trikes, therapeutic trikes and tandem trikes, can make cycling accessible to people who may not be able to use a conventional bicycle. A countywide program could provide new opportunities for active transportation, recreation, greater independence and meaningful community connection.

Have you tried adaptive cycling? Would you use a program if one were available near you? What would make the program work for you?

If you’ve ever driven through the Caldecott Tunnel, this is worth a watch.

A new video from Beyond the Exit takes a fascinating look at more than a century of history inside the Berkeley Hills, from the earliest tunnel to the opening of the modern Fourth Bore in 2013.

That Fourth Bore was a major investment for Contra Costa County. CCTA helped lead the project and invested $125 million in voter-approved Measure J transportation funds toward its construction.

The $417 million project was completed on time and under budget, adding two permanent westbound lanes, eliminating the need for daily tunnel reversals and improving safety and reliability for one of the Bay Area’s most important transportation connections.

It’s a great reminder of what long-term transportation investment can accomplish.

The CCTA Smart Signals project was made possible because of the vision and support of Rep. Mark DeSaulnier, along with other state and local funding and the collaboration of all of our 19 cities and the county!

If you'd like to learn more about this project, check out the project webpage here: https://ccta.ca.gov/projects/countywide-smart-signals/

Today we had the opportunity to present to Contra Costa Transportation Authority - CCTA the funding I secured to help the agency upgrade and develop a network of smart traffic signals between Antioch and Oakley to improve commute times, reduce delays, and ease congestion. This project is part of a larger effort that I’ve been proud to support to make Contra Costa one of the first counties in the country with this transformational technology.
