Thanks to everyone who came out for WIN’s summer social and for our lovely hosts.
We celebrated a first half of the year full of housing ‘wins’ and advocacy that got over 150 people to email their councilors in support of the latest housing proposal.

The City Council unanimously approved zoning that would allow new homes at Bay Colony and Jones Road. Those developments are projected to bring new revenue to Waltham.

Mayor McCarthy vetoed the Bay Colony portion, citing concerns about schools among other issues.

But the fiscal analysis projects that the developments would generate substantially more revenue than their potential school and other city costs.

Learn more, then contact your city councilor and ask them to override the veto and support new homes in Waltham!

“New apartments will overwhelm our schools” is a common argument used to block housing. But MAPC studied 231 Massachusetts districts and found no association between housing growth and enrollment change.

New homes can add students, but that is a reason to plan, not block the homes Waltham needs.

Next, we’ll look at what local projects predict and whether their tax revenue covers the added school costs.

Two major housing wins for Waltham! 🏠

The City Council voted 12–1 to override Mayor McCarthy’s Bay Colony zoning veto. It also unanimously adopted a new Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance designed to make more deed-restricted affordable homes financially feasible.

Thank you to the councilors who backed these policies and to everyone who emailed, attended hearings and spoke up. These wins happened because Waltham residents kept pushing for more homes and a more affordable city.

Empty offices are costing Waltham millions 📉 The solution? Housing! 🏠 Despite the “bad math” you often hear, new apartments actually generate a massive net surplus, paying for both new city services AND old municipal debt.
