Wantage Township Animal Shelter

A few days ago, we shared a photo of this sweet kitten who came into our care suffering from an upper respiratory infection and conjunctivitis in both eyes. Today, we wanted to take a moment to show you just how much better he is doing! ❤️🐾

But this post is about more than just a happy update. It’s also a reminder to recognize and appreciate the incredible people who make these transformations possible.

This week was Shelter Appreciation Week, and we want to take a moment to say THANK YOU to our Animal Control Officers/shelter workers, and veterinarian who go above and beyond every single day for the injured, sick, abandoned, and stray animals who need us most.

When you work in animal welfare, you don’t just do a job. You put your heart and soul into it. You take animals from heartbreaking situations, often not knowing what they’ve been through, and work tirelessly to give them a second chance at a better life. You provide comfort, medical care, patience, love, and hope when they need it most.

Behind every happy ending is a team of people who care enough to make it happen.

To every shelter worker, ACO, veterinary professional, and animal advocate who shows up day after day, even when the days are long and the work is hard — THANK YOU. Your compassion, dedication, and hard work do not go unnoticed.

🚨 THIS IS WHY SPAYING AND NEUTERING MATTERS. 🚨

These pictures are a heartbreaking reminder of what happens when cat overpopulate.

Kittens are born outdoors, left to fend for themselves, and exposed to illness, infection, and other dangers. Eventually, a concerned resident finds them and calls Animal Control. We then step in, transport them to a veterinarian, and do everything we can to get them examined, treated, and on the road to recovery.

But here is the hard truth that many people don’t see.

We receive calls like these every single day.

Every call requires time, transportation, veterinary care, and treatment plans. While we are responding to sick and vulnerable animals, we are also responsible for our many other Animal Control duties and the animals already in our care.

Yes, our shelter has a separate isolation room to help prevent the spread of illness. We take precautions to protect our shelter population, but bringing in sick animals always carries a risk. We must carefully balance helping animals in need with protecting the animals already depending on us.

We will continue to do our best for these animals, but we cannot solve this problem one litter at a time.

THE REAL SOLUTION IS PREVENTION.

✔️ Spay and neuter your cats. Even indoor cats can accidentally get outside.

✔️ If you feed outdoor or community cats, please help get them spayed or neutered. Feeding them provides nourishment, but without sterilization, the population continues to grow.

✔️ Look into Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). Humanely trapping community cats, having them sterilized and vaccinated, and returning them to their managed outdoor colonies can help reduce overpopulation over time.

✔️ Don’t wait until there are kittens. One unaltered cat can contribute to multiple litters, and the cycle can quickly become overwhelming.

Behind every call is an animal that needs help. Behind every litter is an opportunity we had to prevent suffering before it began.

Animal Control cannot do this alone. Residents, caregivers, and the community all play a part in making a difference.

Please be part of the solution, not just the response. Spay and neuter. Prevent suffering. Help break the cycle. 🐾

Yesterday, near the end of our normal business hours, Wantage Township Animal Control received a call from a Wantage Township resident regarding a sick or injured crow.

Unsure of how to safely approach the bird, the resident reached out for assistance. ACO Lynch responded, safely contained the crow, and transported it directly to the Avian Wildlife Center for professional evaluation and care.

Situations like this highlight the importance of working closely with licensed wildlife rehabilitators. Promptly transporting sick or injured wildlife to a qualified facility helps limit potential exposure to other animals, reduces unnecessary stress, and ensures injured animals receive the care they need as quickly as possible.

Animal care doesn’t stop when business hours end. Animal Control and wildlife rehabilitation partners work together to help ensure wildlife receives appropriate care whenever the need arises. Communication and cooperation are essential to protecting both our local wildlife and the community.

A big thank-you to the resident who reached out for help and to the Avian Wildlife Center for their continued partnership and dedication to wildlife care!
