Congratulations to the Auglaize County Historical Society for purchasing Armstrong’s boyhood home. Their goal is to have regular tour operations by 2030, Armstrong’s 100th birthday!

IT'S OFFICIAL! The Auglaize County Historical Society is the new owner of the Armstrong Boyhood Home, 601 W. Benton Street, Wapakoneta. The purchase of the property was made possible through a generous donation of $400,000 from Mr. Kenneth Schreiber, a Dayton native and current resident of Texas. The long term plan for the house is restoration to its mid-1940s appearance. The Historical Society pledges to be a good steward of the property, a great neighbor to our friends on Benton and Buchanan streets, and a faithful contributor to all that makes Auglaize County great. Much more news to come!

On October 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager became the first human to break the sound barrier, using the Bell X-1.

Yeager reached Mach 1.06 at an altitude of 45,000 ft. and was subsequently awarded the 1947 Collier Trophy for his participation in the project.

Margaret Hamilton, computing pioneer for NASA has passed away at the age of 90. Hamilton is best known for her leading work on the Apollo Guidance Computer.

Today, Governor DeWine officially cut the ribbon on the I-75 rest area, which prominently features the museum as its feature exhibit attraction.

The museum is honored to have been a part of this amazing statewide project and would like to thank the Ohio Department of Development, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and the City of Wapakoneta Government for their support in this project.

Happy 91st birthday to Charlie Duke! Born on Oct. 3, 1935, Duke made history in 1972 as the 10th and youngest person to walk on the Moon at age 36.

OCT 1: On this day in 1958, NASA officially began operations! President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act earlier that same year, establishing the agency as the successor to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA).

Why no stars in Apollo photographs? Let’s find out. We asked Andy Saunders, imaging specialist and author of the best-selling book “Apollo Remastered” for an answer.

It all depends on the amount of light. Even on the Moon, stars are still too dim to be captured compared to the extremely bright lunar surface. You can try this on Earth as well, try taking a regular exposure photo of stars with a bright street lamp in the image.
