OK Folks. Let's talk VA Pensions. This one can be a little confusing.
๐บ๐ธ VA PENSION BENEFITS: DON'T OVERLOOK THEM
Did you know the VA has needs-based pension programs that may provide monthly payments to eligible wartime Veterans and certain surviving family members?
There are two important benefits to know about:
๐ช VETERANS PENSION
Veterans Pension provides monthly payments to certain wartime Veterans who meet VA requirements for service, age or disability, income, and net worth.
You may qualify if:
โ
You did not receive a dishonorable discharge
โ
Your income and net worth fall within VA limits
โ
You meet the required active-duty service requirements
โ
You served at least 1 day during a recognized wartime period
โ
AND at least one of the following applies:
You are 65 or older
You have a permanent and total disability
You are a patient in a nursing home receiving long-term care because of a disability
You receive SSDI or SSI
๐ฐ WHAT ARE THE PENSION INCOME LIMITS?
VA uses the Maximum Annual Pension Rate (MAPR) to determine the maximum amount of pension a claimant may receive based on their circumstances.
For December 1, 2025 โ November 30, 2026:
๐ช Veteran with no dependents: $17,441/year
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Veteran with one dependent: $22,839/year
โค๏ธ Surviving spouse with no dependents: $11,699/year
MAPR amounts can be higher depending on the claimant's circumstances, including qualifying dependents and certain Aid & Attendance or Housebound benefits.
๐ฅ Medical Expenses Can Make a Difference
Don't assume that your income automatically disqualifies you.
Certain unreimbursed medical expenses may be deducted from your countable income when determining pension eligibility and payment.
This can include qualifying expenses for things such as:
โข Medical care
โข Prescription medications
โข Health insurance premiums
โข Certain long-term care expenses
โข Other allowable medical expenses
This is an important area where proper documentation matters.
๐ต WHAT ABOUT NET WORTH?
For pension purposes, VA also considers net worth.
For 2025โ2026, the net-worth limit is $163,699.
VA generally considers your financial resources, including those of your spouse when applicable.
However, certain property is excluded, including:
๐ Your primary residence
๐ One vehicle
๐ก Basic personal and household items
Net worth isn't simply "how much money is in your bank account." VA looks at the applicable rules and your overall financial circumstances.
โค๏ธ SURVIVORS PENSION
A VA Survivors Pension may provide monthly payments to certain surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children of qualifying wartime Veterans.
Surviving Spouses
A surviving spouse may qualify if:
โ
They have not remarried after the Veteran's death
โ
The Veteran did not receive a dishonorable discharge
โ
The Veteran met VA's wartime service requirements
โ
The surviving spouse's income and net worth fall within VA limits
Dependent Children
An unmarried child of a deceased wartime Veteran may qualify if:
๐ถ They are under 18, OR
๐ They are under 23 and attending a VA-approved school, OR
โฟ They became permanently incapable of self-support because of a disability that occurred before age 18.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Dependents May Increase the Benefit
A surviving spouse with dependents may be eligible for a higher Survivors Pension payment if they have:
A child under 18
A child age 18โ23 attending school
A child over 18 who is permanently incapable of self-support
There are special rules when a surviving spouse or child is also receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC).
๐๏ธ RECOGNIZED WARTIME PERIODS
VA currently recognizes:
๐ฒ๐ฝ Mexican Border Period: May 9, 1916 โ April 5, 1917
๐ World War I: April 6, 1917 โ November 11, 1918
๐บ๐ธ World War II: December 7, 1941 โ December 31, 1946
๐ฐ๐ท Korean Conflict: June 27, 1950 โ January 31, 1955
๐ป๐ณ Vietnam Era: November 1, 1955 โ May 7, 1975, for Veterans who served in Vietnam
๐ป๐ณ Vietnam Era: August 5, 1964 โ May 7, 1975, for Veterans who served outside Vietnam
๐บ๐ธ Gulf War: August 2, 1990 โ a future date established by law or presidential proclamation
โ ๏ธ WHAT IF THE VETERAN HAD AN OTH?
Don't automatically assume the Veteran or survivor is disqualified.
Depending on the circumstances, there may be options such as:
โก๏ธ Applying for a discharge upgrade
โก๏ธ Requesting a VA Character of Discharge determination
๐ก PENSION IS NOT THE SAME AS VA DISABILITY COMPENSATION
VA Pension is generally a needs-based benefit. It is different from service-connected VA disability compensation.
For some Veterans and surviving spouses, pension can provide an important source of monthly income.
And don't assume you're over the income limit without having your situation reviewed.
Medical expenses, dependents, and other factors can significantly affect the calculation.
