SHARON’S SNIPPETS
2026 - 33

I co-owned Scandia Store with my ex-husband in the early 1980’s. That’s what brought us to the “Hill”, from Jamestown. We re-named it Scandia Country Corner. We lived in the house next door. At that time, the house and store were one piece of property. We had 3 kids, 6,8 and 10…and were open 7 days a week, 10AM-9PM. We had weekly deliveries from Meadowbrook Dairy, Howe’s Candy, Snyder’s Snacks, Pepsi Co. and Stroehmann’s Bread. We sold gas, hunting supplies, ci******es, newspapers, block cheese, ice, and lots of dry groceries too. Our penny candy counter was a big hit, about 30 kinds! Hunting season was huge for us. That’s when a hundred of cars lined the roads up here the first week of deer season. I designed a t-shirt, and local resident, Jim Kilby screen printed them for me. I knew zero about running a retail business, but I learned fast. Cinda Bimber was my right hand. She worked 5-9PM weekdays and some weekends, so I could have family time. Red and white checkered curtains, a table and chairs by the window for visitors and a wood stove made it a cozy welcoming place to shop!

Until next time…

SHARON’S SNIPPETS
2026 - 32

Farming and tools go hand in hand. Early settlers in Elk Township would be helpless without both. But they didn’t run to Lowe’s to pick up the newest and best, they were created by blacksmiths and local craftsmen. They couldn’t build their homesteads without them…or till up fields and gardens, which met no food for their families and animals. They did the best with what they had and improvised what they lacked. They worked hard in all weather conditions. The farmers were the backbone of early life on the hill!

Until next time…

ETHS extends congratulations to Elk Township resident, Jeremy Rulander on his appointment to the rank of Fire Chief, for the Warren City Fire Department. How exciting for all of us to know Jeremy got his start as a volunteer firemen for Scandia VFD, and is still involved today! Way to go, Jeremy, you make us so proud! ( Shown in the pic with with his special lady, Elk Twp. resident, Katie Owen.)
