“We had to find a way and we did. Looking back, we were the luckiest people in the world; there was no choice but to be pioneers.” —Margaret Hamilton

Rest in peace, Margaret. Your trailblazing work leading the development of the on-board flight software for the Apollo spacecraft will forever be remembered.

RON PARISE, a Warren, Ohio native, was a payload specialist on the STS-67 mission! An Ohio Historical Marker located at the First Flight Lunar Module site, honors his career as an astronaut and scientist.

On March 2, 1995, at 1:38 AM EST from pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Space Shuttle Endeavour's mission STS-67 lifted off carrying the Astro payload. After 16 days, Endeavour completed the mission; logging over 6.9 million miles in Earth orbit. This mission was the longest Shuttle flight up to that point.

The Astro payload, which had flown 5 years earlier on STS-35, was a set of ultraviolet telescopes. Improvements in the sensitivity of the telescopes and the extended mission time created a bonanza of new data about the universe.

The crew was commanded by Steve Oswald, with pilot Bill Gregory, payload commander Tamara Jernigan, mission specialists John Grunsfeld and Wendy Lawrence and payload specialists Ronald Parise and Samuel Durrance.
