Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

~ Today's Fire Prevention Week Tip ~

Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

Good morning, Johnson County! It looks like a bit of that summer heat will be sticking around for the next couple of days. Today, though, we should see plenty of sunshine, making it a great day for our monthly outdoor siren test.

These sirens are designed to be heard outdoors, so if you haven't had a chance to step outside yet, keep an ear out for them around 10 a.m. This is only a test, and no action is needed.

Afterward, let us know in the comments where you were and whether you heard the sirens. Your reports help us confirm that each siren is working properly.

Lastly, we will also be testing a new (temporary) portable siren today, located in Warrensburg just off the town square. This siren is positioned to alert Burgfest attendees to severe weather or share other important information.

Here we are and it's Tuesday, so you know what that means, Trivia Tuesday! With this being National Fire Prevention Week, we are going to combine a little history with the now....

The 1871 Great Chicago Fire is often associated with the famous story that Mrs. O’Leary’s cow started the fire. From a modern fire-prevention perspective, which lesson from the disaster is most significant?

A. Livestock and agricultural activities represent the primary ignition hazard in densely populated communities.

B. Fire disasters are primarily caused by a single ignition source and can generally be prevented by eliminating that source.

C. Community vulnerability is determined not only by ignition sources, but by building conditions, fuel loading, weather, infrastructure, and preparedness.

D. Large urban fires are largely unavoidable when weather conditions create high winds and dry conditions.

Drop your answer below and check back later today to see if you got it!

This week is National Fire Prevention Week, and we'll be sharing helpful tips from the National Fire Protection Association to keep Johnson County safe.

Today's tip is a great reminder for all of us! Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

For more information, visit https://www.nfpa.org/events/fire-prevention-week.

And if you have a damaged battery, please bring it to our final Household Hazardous Waste & E-Waste Collection event we have coming up on Saturday, October 17th from 9am-1pm. Contact us here or at 660-747-2666 with questions or for more information.
