I woke from a nightmare
before the morning sun had a chance to light up the sky
I often don’t remember my dreams
only the stomach sinking feeling that pulls me from slumber.
I woke to see that nightmares have bled into reality.
When I did
what Americans do best, searched for distraction through a blue light filter
War is very good at changing the subject
And power loves a loud sky
And a quiet people
I sit safe in my home now, as I write this a notebook in my lap
Hold your babies close while you watch a mother digging bare handed through the rubble. Holding a shoe that has lost its child
Political leaders don’t hide with 6 year old little girls,
yet a classroom became a crater between two empires.
The desks are still arranged in rows beneath the rubble,
a backpack still holds a lunch that will never be eaten.
The blackboard still says today
yet these children will never see the tomorrow that comes after.
You said you are targeting the leaders,
but are bombing schools and neighborhoods.
Iran says their nuclear program is for civilian purposes
but not that they have hidden it under the civilians
The king of the ignorant prays for thunder
loud enough to drown out the past
We are sending our sons to finish what politicians start
Feeding bodies to the ground,
rather than feeding the hungry mouths under his Oxfords
Mistles streak across the sky like the 4th of july
while millions of pages whisper his name
Redacted…redacted….redacted….
We should be furious.
But what we should not do,
Is let ourselves forget that we also have atrocities happening on our own soil
All of it is wrong.

Inform yourself.

Expose yourself to the evil of our world,
expose yourself to the evil of its leaders.
expose yourself to the evil of our government.
Expose yourself to the evil of our president.
Hear the cries of the mothers,
the fathers,
the children.
Don’t turn your face away even as the tears stain your cheeks.
None of them deserved the earth pressing down on them,
and at the very least,
We honor them by witnessing their pain with our eyes open wide.
Our president is pig roasted, Russia on one end, Israel on the other, doing the bidding of genocidal men.
If they can't r**e little girls. They will settle for bombing them.
The death toll climbs like inevitable oil prices.
If they want to sit comfy on their velvet couches
Playing chess with the our sons and daughters
Then let them fight their own wars
Rather than civilian slaughter
When history retells the story, we will be in chapter Four of the section on world war three.
Yesterday we argued about names in a file
Today we argue about blast zones
Tomorrow we forget which came first
History will ask which mattered more
the truth in the files or the children in the rubble.
The answer is buried under both
