S.R. 77 FDOT is widening approximately 20 miles of roadway from two to four lanes along State Road 77. The estimated completion date for the project is fall 2025.

In an effort to reduce congestion, improve safety, create jobs and move people, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is initiating widening and construction improvement along the S.R. 77 corridor in Washington County, Florida. Construction activities on S.R. 77 from the Bay County Line to north of Blue Lake Road began in October 2015. No detours are planned during construction, though motorists may experience minor travel delays and are advised to plan accordingly. Planned improvements of the $87 million project include widening the roadway from two lanes to four lanes; drainage improvements; safety upgrades; and new signage and pavement markings. Further north, FDOT began a $56 million construction project to widen a 3.5 mile segment of State Road (S.R.) 77, from Rogers Road to Cane Mill Road, in Wausau. The project is aimed at increasing capacity on S.R. 77 from two to four travel lanes, along with improving safety and enhancing mobility. During construction, drivers will periodically encounter temporary lane closures. These lane closures will occur during both day and nighttime hours. At least one travel lane will remain open at all times. The project is anticipated to be completed in early 2027. Drivers should be alert for the presence of construction worker and equipment entering and exiting the roadway. General Inquiries:

October is Pedestrian Safety Month.

Whether walking to school, crossing an intersection or heading through a parking lot, pedestrians and motorists often share the same spaces.

Drivers should stay alert, watch for pedestrians and use extra caution near crosswalks and intersections. Pedestrians should use designated crossings when available, remain visible and stay aware of surrounding traffic.

This aerial view shows crews continuing work on the S.R. 77 Widening project, with the new roadway taking shape alongside the existing highway in Wausau.

Crews are currently working on the new roadway embankment, grading and preparing the surface for upcoming construction activities. Heavy equipment can be seen compacting and shaping the material as the project advances.

As work continues, motorists will see construction activity and changing traffic conditions throughout the project area. Please slow down, stay alert and use caution when traveling through the work zone.

This work is part of the $56 million S.R. 77 Widening project that is underway from Rogers Road to Cane Mill Road in Wausau. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2027.

A tire blowout can happen suddenly, making it important to know how to respond before you find yourself in the situation.

Regularly checking tire pressure, tread depth and overall tire condition can reduce the risk of tire failure. If a blowout does occur while driving, staying calm and maintaining control of the vehicle are key to safely getting off the roadway.

Roadwork 101: What happens after concrete is placed on a bridge deck?

Placing and finishing concrete is only part of constructing a bridge deck. The concrete must be properly cured to develop the strength and durability needed for the finished structure.

During the wet curing process, crews lightly spray water over the newly placed concrete and cover it with saturated fabric to retain moisture as it hardens. Depending on the project, bridge deck concrete may undergo wet curing for seven to 10 days.

This process supports proper concrete strength development to create a strong and durable bridge deck.

Florida’s Move Over Law is designed to protect law enforcement officers, first responders, utility workers and others stopped along the roadside.

When approaching or passing a vehicle stopped on the shoulder, drivers should move over one lane when it is safe to do so. If moving over is not possible, drivers should slow down as required by law while passing.

According to NHTSA, nearly half of car seats are installed incorrectly.

Today is National Seat Check Saturday, an opportunity for parents and caregivers to confirm their child is in the right seat and that it is properly installed and secured.

Certified technicians are available to provide guidance on selecting and installing car seats and booster seats based on a child’s age and size.

What does it take to construct the bridge surface vehicles will one day travel across?

This edition of Roadwork 101 follows a bridge deck pour from preparation through curing.

1. Preparing the deck: Before concrete placement begins, crews install reinforcing steel, also known as “rebar,” to strengthen the bridge deck.

2. Placing concrete: Concrete is pumped onto the deck using a “boom” to distribute it efficiently and accurately.

3. Leveling & smoothing : A transverse mechanical screed moves across the deck to level and finish the newly placed concrete to the required thickness and grade.

4. Concrete curing: Once in place, the concrete undergoes a wet-curing process. Saturated fabric is placed over the surface for several days to facilitate moisture retention for maximum strength and durability.

Each step plays an important role in building a strong, durable bridge surface.

Rail Safety Week is Sept. 21–27, bringing attention to safe decisions around railroad tracks and crossings.

Trains can approach more quickly and quietly than expected, and cannot stop quickly to avoid a vehicle or pedestrian on the tracks. At railroad crossings, motorists should obey warning signs and signals, never drive around lowered gates, and make sure there is enough room to completely clear the tracks before crossing.

Progress continues on the S.R. 77 Widening project, and this aerial view gives a great look at the work taking shape through the town of Wausau.

The light-colored material being placed alongside the existing roadway is part of the roadway’s foundation. This base material is placed, graded and compacted to create a strong, stable surface that will support the pavement above it. FDOT’s roadway design includes multiple pavement layers, with the base serving as an important structural layer beneath the asphalt.

This work is part of the $56 million S.R. 77 Widening project that is underway from Rogers Road to Cane Mill Road in Wausau. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2027.
