Rare diseases are often treated as invisible conditions, leaving patients out of research, policy, and treatment - especially for women. There is lacking data on the impacts of rare disease on women compared to men, but we know that there are disproportionate impacts of rare disease on women.
“Rare diseases affect family, community, and identity. For patients it touches every single aspect of life," said Holly Jones, President and CEO of HERstory In Color in Color.
SWHR convened an interdisciplinary rare disease roundtable of Jones and others to discuss rare diseases in women's health. Read takeaways from the roundtable: https://swhr.org/fostering-care-support-and-research-for-rare-disease-patients/

"I recognize myself and every woman in the pages of Sara’s book, as she makes a compelling case that closing the women’s health gap must go beyond biological understanding into the society factors of being a girl. This book has the power to change the way we research women’s health and autoimmune conditions," said SWHR CEO Kathryn Schubert.
Written by Sara Hirsh Bordo, award-winning documentarian and founder of the female impact-production company Women Rising®, her first book AUTOIMMUNITY AND THE GOOD GIRLS calls attention to diseases and what she calls a “climate crisis of women’s health.” Read more: autoimmunityandthegoodgirls.com
