The lesser long-nosed bat is one of a few long-distance migrant bat species. The species calls both the US and Mexico home. They typically rely on agave and cactus flowers but who can resist a hummingbird feeder?! USFS works with Bat Conservation International, Battus and other partners in Mexico to restore habitat and educate the public about this vulnerable species.

Are these hummingbirds in Halloween costumes? Nope, they're lesser long-nosed bats!

Regular pollinators of agave and cactus flowers, they also visit hummingbird feeders at night across southern Arizona. It's one of the ways scientists monitor their populations.

Last week, USDA Forest Service staff had some special visitors - live migratory raptors! Our partners from Earth Conservation Corps presented Skye, the red-tailed hawk (pictured below with her handler, John Wood and Chief Moore) and 3 other birds. Skye is non-releasable due to a serious injury although, as an educational ambassador, she is quite impactful! This year so far, the Urban Outreach and Partnerships team brought the Earth Conservation Corps and their charismatic birds to more than 260 people in underserved DC neighborhoods.

The Migratory Raptor presentation is part of a broader effort of International Programs’ Urban Outreach and Partnerships team to inspire and inform people about the importance of conserving the habitats of migratory species.
