May is Building Safety Month, and we’re celebrating by giving residents the tools they need to tackle home projects the right way. 👇
If you’ve ever wondered, “Do I actually need a permit for this?” you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions DOB receives, and getting it wrong can turn a simple project into a serious headache.
That’s why we’re hosting a free educational workshop on Tuesday, May 19, from 12:00 – 3:30 PM, to help DC homeowners and tenants understand the permitting and inspections process, so you can move forward on any project safely, legally, and confidently.

🧱💡 Yesterday, Director Brian Hanlon joined leaders from across the country at the U.S. Construction & Manufacturing Summit at AIA|DC to discuss the future of resilient, low-waste building construction.
During the “Resilient Materials for Building & Manufacturing” panel, Director Hanlon highlighted how DC is leading with innovation, from the growing use of mass timber to major projects like the RFK Campus.
With technologies like solar, battery storage, and geothermal systems on the horizon at RFK, and DOB now leading code development in the District, we’re helping shape a built environment that is safe, sustainable, and built for the future.
