Today, the Vice Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps in the US, Amb. Mathilde Mukantabana, and the Head of Mission of the African Union Mission to the USA to the United States, Amb. Hilda Suka-Mafudze, led a meeting of the corps to discuss the foreign and economic policy priorities of the new U.S. administration and how hashtag
hashtag can strategically position itself in the evolving political landscape.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the Corps engaged Amb. Troy Fitrell, Acting Assistant Secretary for African Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, to discuss the administration's priorities and explore opportunities to strengthen U.S.-Africa partnerships.
Prof. Landry Signé, Executive Director and Professor at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Washington DC and Senior Fellow at the The Brookings Institution , was also invited to share his expert insights with the African Diplomatic Corps. He offered perspectives on the diplomatic and economic priorities of the new U.S. administration and how Africa can position itself effectively within the evolving global landscape.

On the sidelines of the The World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington D.C., Governor of the Central Bank of John Rwangombwa participated in the Toronto Centre Roundtable Discussion; “Navigating the Future: Central Banking and Supervision in a Transformative Era”.

With the focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) the discussion aimed to generate insights into how institutions can adapt and thrive in this new landscape. Three key issues were highlighted: the transformative tool of AI, the need for effective collaboration and the changing profile of the supervisor.

Key takeaways included;
1. Need for collaboration among multiple stakeholders to address challenges in the financial sector, particularly around data management and AI integration

2. Challenges of managing data effectively, including maintaining control over data and handling the risks associated with third-party data providers. Data security and management were highlighted as critical issues that need continuous investment.

3. The future roles of supervisors in the context of AI advancements. Supervisors must adapt by acquiring new skills in data science and technology to understand and assess AI systems effectively.

4. Establishing collaborative frameworks for data sharing and interoperability across borders, particularly within the African financial context. Projects aiming to integrate payment systems across countries were mentioned as significant steps forward.

5. The growing concern over data concentration in the hands of a few significant players, noting the cost and entry barriers to creating competitive large language models.

On the sidelines of the in Washington DC, Chief Economist of the Central Bank of Rwanda Thierry Kalisa participated in the High-Level Roundtable on Capacity Development for Impact in Sub-Saharan Africa, where he shared Rwanda’s progress under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility.

With the support of the International Monetary Fund has advanced in five key reform areas: climate-related spending monitoring, integrating climate risks into fiscal planning, public investment sensitivity to climate issues, financial risk management, and disaster risk reduction.
