It’s Energy Awareness Month right here in the District. October’s just the time to think about how you can save by swapping out old, inefficient appliances for new, energy-efficient equipment.

Hot tip: Is your hot water heater 10 years or older? Avoid an emergency by replacing it before it fails. Compared to a standard electric water heater, an ENERGY STAR® heat pump water heater can save a household of 4 up to $550 in electricity each year. Energy Efficiency Day in the District! The DCSEU was excited to join the District Department of Energy & Environment and community partners at the 2026 Energy Efficiency Day Resource Fair at the The Go-Go Museum & Café in Anacostia! We connected with District residents, shared resources, and helped our neighbors learn more about programs and opportunities that can help them save energy, lower costs, and create more comfortable homes. The event also brought together partners including the Public Service Commission, Office of the Tenant Advocate, and more.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to connect with us! Together, we’re building a cleaner, more energy-efficient DC.

Keep the heat. Lose the drafts. DC renters, heating season is here! From October 1 through May 1, rental housing must meet DC’s minimum heating requirement of 68°F. Two-pipe systems and other qualifying systems have until October 15 to provide heat.

Before colder weather settles in, check doors and windows for drafts. Report gaps or damaged weatherstripping to your property manager and request repairs to help keep warm air inside and reduce wasted energy.

From groundbreaking to grand opening!

DCSEU Manager of Account Management Yvonne Coles was excited to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Emblem Apartments in NoMa and see her customer's vision become a reality. This new 100% affordable, 115-unit community is now open and welcoming residents. The DCSEU was proud to work alongside Marshall Heights Community Development Organization and The NRP Group and project partners to support energy-efficient features that will help create comfortable, sustainable homes for District families. The DCSEU joined the District of Columbia Housing Authority and residents from Kenilworth Courts for a free energy-saving kit distribution at the Kenilworth Courts Community Center.

Our team distributed energy-saving kits featuring two air purifiers, a smart power strip, and Wi-Fi-enabled smart plugs to help residents make simple home upgrades that can reduce energy use, improve comfort, and enhance indoor air quality.

We’re proud to continue our partnership with DCHA and connect District residents with resources that help improve quality of life while saving energy, lowering utility costs, and reducing emissions.

We love our DC seniors! The DCSEU was proud to join the Hattie Holmes Open House & Health Resource Fair and connect with some of the residents who have helped shape the District into the community it is today. Our team shared information about DCSEU programs and resources that can help residents save energy, lower energy costs, and make their homes more comfortable and efficient. Our seniors are an important part of the DC community, and we’re committed to doing everything we can to make sure they have access to the energy-saving programs, resources, and support available to them. There’s nothing better than seeing our customers’ work in action! The DCSEU's Account Manager, Yvonne Coles, and Engineering Consultant, Ronald Hobson, recently visited their customer, Jubilee Housing, for a tour of its aquaponics farm in Northwest DC. The visit gave them an opportunity to learn more about their day-to-day operations, see the farm firsthand, and strengthen the relationship beyond the office. At the DCSEU, working with our customers means understanding their unique needs and finding ways to help them save energy and build a more sustainable DC. We’re proud to support organizations like Jubilee Housing that are making an impact in our community.
