Have you taken your children (or grandchildren) to Theodore Roosevelt Island lately? How would they like a byline? We welcome their submissions - anything from a drawing, to a poem, or a few paragraphs - about TRI for our new Youth Arena - ordinarily available exclusively to TRA members, but anyone published will get a copy! Your child's published work will be the perfect end-of-summer happy news to share with family and friends!

The new publication, a sister to our members-only Arena digital newsletter, will be FOR youth, BY youth and we can't wait to see what your child has to say about their trip to TRI, or anything that they saw on the Island! Submissions should be directed to [email protected]

They're back!! Have you ever wanted a guided tour of the Island? On select Saturdays at 10:30am (including this Saturday, May 21) NPS volunteers will lead tours about the nature and history of the island. Your "Island Safari" will vary depending on the audience and the guide, but generally last 1 to 1.5 hours and cover 1 to 1.5 miles on park boardwalks and trails (some of which can be muddy). Look for the "Tours Today" sign and meet on the parking lot side of the pedestrian bridge. Free. Reservations not required.
Map pictured shows one route option, but tours vary.

Spring migration is in full swing, and TR Island is a known birding *hotspot* where neotropical warblers pass through on their way from their southern winter homes to their northern breeding locations. Over 400 million birds will be on the wing this weekend! The lucky among you may catch sight of them as they fuel up at TR Island (and elsewhere) along the way. Here are just a few that we've seen on the Island. Theodore Roosevelt, an avid birder throughout his life, would have loved the chance to see them.

Love TR Island? Come help restore it! Our friends the Arlington Regional Master Naturalists (ARMN) are hosting their monthly invasive species removal on Sunday, May 15 from 10am to noon. Bring your own gloves and tools if you have them (pruners are best for this month), but they will also have some tools available. Look for the ARMN Park Stewards on the parking lot side of the pedestrian bridge. More info and RSVP here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0e4baea62fa6f94-maytri

Did you know that the Theodore Roosevelt Island Memorial was designed by the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. (along with his associate Henry Hubbard)? FLO learned his craft working alongside his talented father, whose 200th birthday we are celebrating this week! 4/26/1822 https://fb.watch/cFB6KRW09g/
