I have $5. Can I actually start an emergency fund?

Yes. Here's how.

You don't need a lump sum to build financial security-small, consistent deposits create real safety nets. Start where you are, not where you think you should be. Pick a savings vehicle (app, jar, account), commit to one small amount weekly, and celebrate the win. That momentum? Reinvest it.

Financial stability isn't about perfection. It's about showing up for yourself, one deposit at a time.

Save this. Share it. And if you want more resources for building sustainable financial health, we're here. 💙

We're looking for researchers, writers, data analysts, and comms-savvy volunteers who want their skills to matter. Every spreadsheet you organize, every public record you dig up, every brief you write-it directly fuels the advocacy and programs that help LGBTQIA+ residents in DC build sustainable lives. This isn't busy work. It's the unglamorous backbone of systemic change. If you've got the skills and want to see them translate into real community power, we want to hear from you.

Being in the city isn’t the same as feeling you belong.

A 2026 survey of 304 LGBTQ+ residents in D.C. found that at least 80% felt isolated often or some of the time. Even in a vibrant LGBTQ+ community, meaningful connection doesn’t happen automatically.

Belonging grows through trusted peer relationships, welcoming spaces, and support that’s easier to find. At Capital Resource Connections, we work alongside local partners to help q***r and trans residents of all ages connect with resources and community, because support should feel accessible, affirming, and built for us.

What has helped you feel welcomed and connected? Share below: your insight may help someone else find their people.

Financial knowledge shouldn't be something we figure out alone. For far too many of us in the LGBTQIA+ community, the money questions that matter most went unanswered for years, and that gap shows up in our stability, our savings, and our ability to plan for the long haul.

That's why we're building our LGBTQIA+ Community Financial Competency Workshops here in DC. Our goal is simple: give you practical, judgment-free education on the topics you actually need, so you can move from getting by to building something sustainable.

We want to hear from you first. What's one money topic you wish someone had walked you through earlier? Budgeting, credit, housing, saving, benefits, planning for later in life? Drop your answer in the comments so we can shape the workshops around what this community needs most.

And if someone in your circle has been quietly wondering about the same things, tag them. Learning together is how we all get further.

Registration closes soon!
